  • If by 'near future' you mean somewhere around 2040 to 2050 then it is fairly likely that we will reach the singularity. It might also happen later, as long as we do not cease to exist we will at some point reach it.

    As for what it will bring? Mass-unemployment across the board, in research, manufacturing, agriculture, the human worker would be obsolete. The question is, will the near infinite capacity that such independent development brings be used to benefit the developed world, whole world or only a select few.
    Also, what reason would a fully autonomous AI which is superior to human intelligence in every way, with access to all production and research have to work for us or even keep us alive?

    It could mean great technological advance and the dawn of a new age for humans, but it could also mean the beginning of the end of humans and the dawn of something new.

    It would however be a very important (and exciting) turning point in human history and as such I would like to be alive to experience it. It's like a good story, one just wants to know what happens next.
