  • This is going to sound awfully po-faced but, given that Twilight appears to appeal to a greater proportion of females than males, wouldn't it have been nice if the female characters were portrayed so strongly that we may have been talking about Team Bella?

I'm a particular fan of the His Dark Materials trilogy and the focal character, Lyra, is portrayed as strong, independent, intelligent, and having a strong relationship with a powerful male character, but very much being an equal force in the relationship. I know this is completely off topic but children's literature is going to help define how the next generation of women (and men) think about themselves. It's kind of important.

      • You have to be kidding. She looks moody enough as it is. Would you really want to risk making her face even sourer? God help the mirrors of the world!

      • I thought I was going to get hate for that comment. It seems more popular these days to be ignorant and insulting about these things. :)

      • It's an amazing trilogy. Apparently teenagers enjoy them but, to me, there are some very adult themes in the book. The author did a wonderful job of speaking on more than one level at once. I'd recommend them to anyone.
