Okay same packet of candy doesn't equate to soul mates. Synchronicity can certainly be "soul mate" material but there's more depth than just the same chosen candy. That really sounds like a mere coincidence and doesn't have much to do with the type of person they are. If it had been the same obscure band that only has 500 fans in the entire world, that would probably sell me more on the whole soul mate ordeal.
Maybe you'll have more in common, who knows but having trivial things in common doesn't equate to soul mate. If you have the same morals on gun control, marriage, raising kids, abortion, etc then I'd say you're onto something good.
My ex and I had a lot in common. She and I shared the same favorite song but I'm now married to someone else and far better off and we have more morals/important life goals in common so that's more evidence/food for thought for you.
