Swine flu portrayed by the media?

I think the media are blowing the swine flu "epidemic" out of proportion. 36,000 Americans die from the regular flu EACH YEAR, and even more from pneumonia. I'm sick of the news trying to scare the crap out of us and want to strangle anyone who is actually concerned about dying...is that normal?

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • I was wondering about that too. I mean it is just the flu right? Lots of people get the flu and most of them live. We have enough medicine and adequate medical care in most countries that this is not an issue. For places like the US to get scared over something as silly as the flu is ridiculous. Yes I hate the flu and try to avoid it as much as possible. I don't think one or two days of throwing up is going to kill me. A lot of countries go to the US since they apparently have the best medical care anyone could offer. So why would they make such a big issue over a flu?

  • I agree completely, i believe they are doing this so the vaccine sells. The media leaches off of everything and makes anything nonthreatening seems so awful and vice versa. Completely normal reaction.

  • the news thrives off people's fears, the more they can scare people, the more people will stay glued to the tube...nothing new there

  • This one is a big no shit. I had swine flu on THURSDAY so I took that day off of class. Today, on Monday, I was kicked out although I feel 100%% better out of the fear that I was going to kill the class.

Come on people, this is getting rediculous.

  • I actually had swine flu 3 months ago and I survived. The doctor told me it was similar to the regular flu, just a different strand of it. It really was no big deal at all. So I totally agree that the media was just blowing it out of proportion.

  • they're just looking for a story, and because other news stations are concerned, the media thinks that society will be concerned and want more info, so they follow suit

its probably going to be like that bird flu from last year and not be anything

  • Normal. Just turn the TV off.

Ignore the news, like I do, and I still hear what I need to know. There is web news I visit occasionally to get the highlights.

Don't drive yourself insane. That's easy to do with all the crap that is called "news", none of which is newsworthy.
