Sweden never shut down for covid

If lockdowns are so affective how come Sweden never even shut down their economy, kept bars and gyms open, and they did alright?

People often say "they should have done serious lockdowns for a month and it would have flattened the curve!". Meanwhile Sweden stayed open and did better than us.

Ye they realized just how low the mortality rate was/ is and didn't shit their pants over it like most places did.

Sounds like my town, we didn't shut anything down or wear masks. The towns/city after them wore masks but didn't shut down any stores.

Sweeden tried an experiement that was a partial success, and a huge failure in other ways.

The partial success was that people actually practiced social distancing and did not question the need.

They missed badly about nursing homes and other institutions with high density of living - and the death rates within those institutions was atrocious (I believe the highest by far of any western country).

Then the general population started to get it - even with social distancing. I believe Meatballsandwich is likely correct that they had about 5X the fatalities per population unit as most other western countries that did shut down.

While Sweden might not shut down again in the future... they most certainly are going to handle high density living differently and I believe a mask and hand cleanliness standard would be quickly implemented.

Dude, we lost like 5 times the amount of people that the rest of the nordics did combined. Definitely not a success, if you ask me.

    • Do you know when the other nordic countries opened back up? From what I've read they did not have strict lockdowns either but had some. But even remaining open Sweden did better per capits than the USA and only slightly worse than the UK. Both the USA and UK had pretty strict lockdowns in most areas.

They had strict lockdowns, unlike us.
