I suppose you have never heard of a metaphor? "strong and independent" probably isn't often meant in the literal sense of lifting strength, but rather strength of character.
However, my wife is pretty damn physically strong, often sharing a lot of the harder work on the boat. I'd like to see you match her for strength and stamina, on a pitching deck, in 12 foot seas and 40 knot winds. We've seen plenty of "strong" men cower in terror, while she leaps into the fray, unphased.
