Stinky bellybutton

Every so often my bellybutton starts to stink and if I stick my finger in there I find this goo which smells absolutely disgusting. Even after cleaning it out daily it takes a week or two for it to go away. Sometimes it gets so bad I can smell it through my shirt and it crusts up around the rim of my bellybutton. Sometimes I'll stick a little wad of toilet paper in there to soak up the juice and keep the stink from spreading.

I know it's gross, but Is this normal?

When two folds of skin are in close contact with each other and there is no movement, the moisture and oil naturally excreted by the skin will become stale and infected with bacteria and will begin to smell.
This phenomenon is not confined to the belly button. Anyone who has had a broken shoulder and had their arm in a bent position on a sling will soon discover that the skin on the inside of the elbow will smell unless attended to.
Unfortunately, the skin in the belly button just remains there in close contact and with no movement or airing so bacteria have a field day and a horrible smell develops.
Preventing this means making sure the skin is well ventilated and kept dry.
Some people have a deeper button which makes it more difficult to keep it dry. Some people perspire more than others so it's easy to see how the problem affects some people and not others.
Some years ago, when I never bothered about my button, I noticed it was very sore when drying after a bath. It was also very smelly and red.
All I did from then on was make sure I washed it properly and then dried it thoroughly afterwards. I then "checked" it regularly and the smell and soreness disappeared and has never returned.

So... For all you sufferers, if you prevent the skin folds from clamming together and you ensure it is well dried after bathing, there is every chance the problem will be cured. Dry it gently by dabbing it with a soft tissue because the slightest roughness will make it sore and the skin will then weep moisture and start to smell. I suggest you do not apply any vaseline type cream as this may trap the moisture and cause added soreness. Talcum powder will help to dry it but beware of the powder becoming moist and crusty. Hopefully, once any soreness has gone the button will stop weeping.
Prevention in future means trying to keep it well aired and dry even if this means dabbing it with a tissue once or twice during the day.

The medical profession these days tend to look for a quick fix, as indeed we all do, but simply applying antibiotic creams on a regular basis will only lead to a recurrence after the temporary "cure."
I hope these few comments will be helpful and remember that once the problem is sorted, it is much easier to keep it that way than to let it return and start all over again.

Stinky belly button is from Candida yeast invading the navel tract. Squeeze out the goo, then keep the area dry with alcohol and plenty of fresh air. Apply a topical antifungal cream/oil daily. In the meanwhile, cut back on sugar, coffee, ibuprofen, antibiotics, and stress, all of which make the Candida problem worse. Also, chew your meals slowly and get more omega 3's in your diet. It may sound unrelated but trust me it helps. Keep up your hydration and fiber. Find a list of alkalizing foods online and indulge in them. All this helped my bf; his stinky belly button has never come back.

I thought it was normal to have a stinky one a few days a week. I don't mean daily and I don't mean one that is draining. I was thinking if it is draining, that was suspect of bacteria, not fungus or virus. But the Candida yeast does make perfect sense since that does grow in the stomach and I think intestines.

I had surgery 5 weeks ago on my belly (laparoscopic) and my belly button started to weep yellow orange blood stuff from my belly button in week 1. By week 4 it stopped. But again, I had a scope shoved in my belly button and I had an infection - that is why it was weeping. I just kept it taped up with surgical gauze given to me. I didn't want that stuff to get on my clothes. I also kept it taped up with the gauze at night since it wept at night too. I kept it clean with mild soap like dial. I didn't use alcohol or peroxide since I was told from my obgyn surgeon that would be too much and too strong. I also didn't put ANY of that darn anti biotic gel on it. Neosporin. That made it WORSE.

I suspect that a good diet with low sugar and low fat would help in all cases of health, not just for a healthy non stinky belly button. But I believe I have read if a yeast infection is present, then limit sugar. I think sugar feeds the virus/fungus.

I too have the same problem and showed/asked my nurse about it and she said it was a yeast infection which my doctor also said it was. He said it is caused by not drying the area very well. In any case you can get an over the counter anti-fungal cream for it or your doctor can prescribe a cream. And for those of you with the wise cracks, show some respect, you may have a problem someday that you need help with.

I know what it is!!!! I read on someone else's thread about the same problem that it had something to do with a diet too high in simple sugars. Since the reason I was looking at threads was because I had the same issue, I looked back at my diet over the past week. Sure enough, over the past few days I had drank a lot of soda when I normally drink water, and had been eating a lot of bad carbs. Over these past two days I've been watching the sugar intake and drinking more water. Guess what? No more stinky belly button!! Try it! I've had this issue off and on for several years and I've finally found something that works - less sugar. Alcohol, soap, drying it out with a hair dryer, etc. and nothing has made a noticeable change til now.

im a clean person too and have also had this problem!!

if ur belly button smells or has any sort of dicharge/weeping, it's more than likely a bacterial infection. inner belly buttons get warm and moist in heat and are subject to all nasties...

it's best to use savlon antiseptic cream (to kill the bacteria), or canesten cream...apply twice a day using a cotton bud. if u find it hard cleanin the area, try cleaning using a cotton bud too.

    Okay...
For all of those telling you that maybe one day when "you're in the real world" I just want to let you know that there is no such thing. That's right the "real world" does not exist. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. For those spreading lies about the "real world"; wake up, it does not exist. The real world is all in your imagination and more responsibility does not constititute the existence of such.

Now...about that belly button. :) It's perfectly normal to have a smelly belly! I bet that's great to hear. Bacteria thrive in areas that are dark, damp, and warm. Name me one innie belly that doesn't fit the dark and warm criteria? I suppose a very shallow button could be light, but that's about it. Now as far as the damp goes. If you wash, swim, dance in the rain, sweat, or do anything else, then chances are your belly button has cause to be damp. Therefore a belly button is the ideal home for bacteria, which stink, both metaphorically and literally.

A good way to help prevent this is by making sure you completely dry your belly button after washing. Since it will become damp again with sweat, this does not ensure perfection, however by it being completely dry at some point, you discourage bacteria from taking up residence in your belly button.

For those of you who think you might have gotten an infection. (It's not because you are overweight, as earlier posted.) Try treating it just as you would any other infection before going to a doctor. Your primary goal should be to discourage bacteria from staying by keeping your belly button as dry and clean as possible.

Hope this is helpful for all those seeking real advice on the case of mysterious smelly belly. :)

I would like to end this rubbish for everyone. Please find below the guidelines to follow if you have this problem!

It may be caused by a number of reasons, it is down to the individuals body.

If you have redness, inflammation (swelling), and/or a yellowish discharge inside or around your belly button, follow these simple guidelines for 2-3 days:

try not to pick or scratch the affected area,
clean your belly button gently with salt water twice a day, and
dry it carefully but thoroughly after washing.
If after a few days you still have the same symptoms, you should see your GP so that they can investigate the cause of the irritation. If you have an infection your GP may prescribe a course of antibiotics.

Hope this helps everyone who needs it.

I had one too 5 weeks ago. I had an infection in week one, but I got on Septra. Got an allergic reaction then went on Keflex. Fixed it right up. I just kept mine dry and clean clean clean with regular soap and I made sure it was very dry after each shower. Wet places means bacteria, even without keyhole surgery.

    Hi.. StinkyBB

I came here because I had the same problem as you, I ended up with the same sentiments as you, I even signed up to post this, cannot guarantee more posts though.

You quoted someone as being an Ars*hole, you were too kind to them, I read some of your previous posts, you were too kind to them as well.

From what I see this thread is a waste of time, from the other threads I read they are a waste of time too. Either this site needs moderating or taking off line, it serves no purpose except to let kids and idiots type a load of garbage (Apologies to the (About 5%%) sensible replies)

I would suggest to anyone who might have a genuine enquiry as to a health problem that they seek advice elsewhere as this does not seem the place to get it.

At the end of the day, I wish you the best of luck with your problem, if you do find an answer I would be pleased to hear it.

Kind regards to the sensible replyees, as for the rest, euthanasia is your best option.

Your right, there are a lot of imature, insensitive lowlifes out there.I have the same problem and I have had some success in figuring out what the problem is and what you can do to get rid of it.It is a yeast overgrowth that is probably brought on by a sugary diet.Things you can do to fix this is cut out sugar as much as you can.find a good herbal intestinal cleanse and take the capsules like it says and it will kill the bad bacteria in your intestines and after time this smell will gradually go away.Drinking metamucil every 2-3 days is very smart too.A enema wouldnt be a bad idea either.

You could be diabetic. Even a slightly raised blood glucose is a feast for the yeast that normally colonize your skin. Switch to low-glycemic whole-food carbs, no dairy, very little meat diet and exercise to a dripping sweat every day. Try that for a couple of weeks to see if it helps. Whatever you do, see your doctor.

Everyone's belly button smells. I was, coincidentally, discussing this with my parents a few days ago. The belly button has the most bacteria of anywhere on the body because it's so hard to clean. Goodness knows what germs have gotten in there, but you cannot reach. It's really gross, but unfortunately normal.

However if there is this much goo coming out of it then it may be infected. Go and see a Doctor, and refrain from picking or messing around with it. Leave it alone and that will help it to heal.

  • rvovum

BTW...In addition to my previous post, I've noticed that some people are saying that is some medical condition or some type of infection - this is NOT the case. As long as it just smells funky and your not oozing, bleeding, or something else that shouldn't be there - your fine. It's just that the bellybutton doesn't get a lot of air, nor does your backside. Therefore, it might get a little smelly. You have to realize that your body temperature is 98.6, yes the outside isn't that warm - but you have to factor in the climate, clothes, and your activity. One thing to keep in mind, use a good deodorant - not a real cheap one. Those do not work well under your armpits and they are not going to work well in other places either! Anyway, I hope this helps everyone as well as it has for me!

I HAVE AN AWESOME SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM!!! I've had this same exact problem, no matter how skinny I am at the time. Unfortunately, I have a deep bellybutton. So, I use my deodorant, which is Secret - Shower Fresh brand. Of course, you obviously don't have to use that particular brand - but it does smell nice. After you shower and dry yourself off really well - either rub your finger over the deodorant and apply or use the corner of the deodorant, then rub in. I have also found other areas to use this. Let's put it this way, if it's dark and covered up most of the day, it may not be staying the freshest. I think you can use your imagination! If you use the deodorant (at least my type does), you will stay fresh ALL DAY long and even the next! Good luck!

I had this forever! I tried everything from soaking rubbing alcohol in it to Q tips etc. Finally I broke down and asked my doctor about it. Try "hibicleanse". You can get it at any pharmacy OTC. It is the sterile soap doctors use before surgery. It has an active ingriedient called Clorahexadine. It completely kills any germs in there. I did it twice. Just put a bunch of the soap in there and started picking away til all the crust was gone. Days later I tried to see if I could get anything out or see if it would smell.... NOthing!! Relief. I still wash it about 3 times a week just to prevent reoccurence.

Okay, seriously this is a sign of some kind of yeast/bacterial infection. This comes and goes for me. When I've been eating too many carbs and not drinking enough water, this tends to happen to me. And my belly button has issues man! It smells nasty up in there! Smells like a tiny bug crawled up in there and died and started rotting for weeks or something! Sorry, for those with weak stomachs....but okay, it smells, we all get that, right? It smells BAD!

No but for real, stop eating CARBS, breads, cereal, sugar, etc.... and drink lots of water and it should go away. I will stick a Q-tip up in there to try to get what gunk I can out of that hole! Yuck!!

I have the same problem and been researching it and came across this article
"The doctor told me that I had a bacterial infection which is actually fairly common. A bit of bacteria gets in there and, encouraged by the dark conditions, spreads and causes problems. It's something akin to a yeast infection, which also grows in dark conditions. The infection seems to occur more commonly amongst persons like myself who are a little bit larger. (Maybe because our belly buttons are more in the dark?) Symptoms include bleeding, the excretion of a white, smelly substance, and in some severe cases like mine, the oozing of pus. Sometimes pain and soreness accompanies the other symptoms.

    Hello Lovely Lady

I hope this is no longer an issue for you!

My wife had the exact same symptoms, word for word. She no longer has it.

She developed adult acne and started treatment initially with some standard oral antibiotics. She noticed her belly button did not smell so much though it was still there.

She was refered to a dermatologist who put her on Roaccutane which contains the drug Isotretinoin which shuts down all of your skin's oil glands. This cured her, it has been 3 yrs and it has not come back.

It is a very extreme drug only given in cases were the acne does not respond to creams and antibiotics. It does give an idea on what the problem is, it is most likely something like acne, a miro organism feeding off your bodies oil which produces this bad smell.

You can try taking this information to your GP or specialist and hopefully they can help.

The stupid UK NHS doctors told my wife she just had to live with it! Dont lose hope, it can be stopped.

  • I had the same thing happen to me quite often and I got it looked at at the doctor's during a check-up. I was told that it was because of a soap and water build up. The smell usually occurs if there is sweat mixed in with the soap and water residue. It has nothing to do with a piercing, but it makes sense that people with piercings have it happen since they need to keep their bellybutton area clean.

I gained about 15 pounds in the last year, and my BB went from pretty flat to somewhat deep: most of the pudge went to my abdomen and butt.

I, too, suddenly noticed a nasty smell, and was horrified to realize it was my BB!
Never had that problem before, ever!!! (And I'm over 40, stretched-out belly from childbearing)

I shower at least once daily, and make sure to soap up the BB and rinse it out well, dry it, and use a medicated powder (over the counter, not expensive) like Gold Bond or its equivalent (I'm in the US).

And if the BB begins to smell nasty, then do all but powder it, and use an antifungal cream or spray (like for jock itch/athlete's foot).

This is totally normal, but you need to change how you shower/bathe. You literally need to clean out your belly button with soap using your finger and sticking it in there.
My ex from high school was super hot, but she had a sensitive belly button and didn't like to stick her finger in it when showering... It reeked so bad. I tried to laugh it off and ignore it but we finally had to wash my finger and leave the room. Pretty funny.

Yeah, sometimes I get worried about my hygiene, so i stick my finger in my bellybutton and sniff it a little, it doesn't stink TERRIBLE it just has a small odor, I think it is normal, because we all have our own smell, so it's just our bodies and how they are, but green goo, nasty crust, that's terrible, I do have bellybutton lint, I wash it about, hmm whenever I think it needs to be washed, I don't know if it's something to worry about or not, so i don't worry, i just be sure to clean around there when I think it needs to be clean.

Need to change your diet drastically. If it is a yeast infection. Eat plain biotic yogart; drink at least 3ltrs of water per day; eat fresh veg and fresh fruit daily and cut out junk food, nuts, and sugary food.

Of course you must wash daily even 3 times a day if you are very overweight and sweaty. I'm not overweight but I love feeling fresh and wash three times a day just because it makes me feel sexy.

I believe it due to the fact that your bellybutton is connected directly to your heart. The bellybutton is simply attempting to release the extra calories you don't use. My recommendation is every time you see the buildup, you call an exorcist.

I have had this problem come up many times. I have obsessive hygiene and eat a good diet. However, I sweat a lot, and I have lots of allergies. This will happen to me from wearing pants with any kind of metal snap in the front (near the belly button). It also happens from wearing pantyhose (anything that presses on that area and keeps the belly button from breathing), or from being hot and/or sweaty. If it's truly infected, you can lay on your back and pour a little bit of hydrogen peroxide into it from the cap. Let it sit for several minutes and then dab it up before bathing. Never, EVER scrub or scratch at it. You'll make it a lot worse. After you shower, always make sure your belly button is thoroughly dry. Something else I've recently discovered is to dry it and then mist the inside with an acne body spray with salicylic acid in it. My local dollar store carries one with 2% salicycle acid that works great. Just make sure the mist is able to dry fully before you put your clothes on. It has worked out really well for me.

I watched a programme about a woman with burns that they were treating with fresh pineapple applied to the burns. After trying everything else (disinfectant, perfume, keeping it clean and dry etc. etc. etc. but nothing seemed to work) I tried this on my belly button and it works! Immediately I had solved the problem! Do please tell me how you get on. I now only have to use it once or twice a week.
I just take a narrow piece of fresh pineapple (tinned doesn't work I don't think) and gently put it in the belly button and turn it round and pull it out. I don't dry inside and just dry outside and hey presto all the smell has gone!
I've love to know if I've helped anyone else with this problem.
I have also found it helpful to eat pineapple (not the piece I've used obviously!) and found this cleans my mouth and tongue too.

    Hi,

I also had the same problem, It happens because when you trim or shave your chest and stomach area, the hard hair goes into your navel,it cuts the inner skin.
All you need to do is .. get some copper sulphate crystal..(blue colour)
and put a small stone of Copper sulphate in your navel,
its going to hurt alot but you will be fine in 3-4 days.

It's a fungal infection. A good natural and inexpensive way of handling it is to buy some 100% pure Tea Tree Oil and swab some in daily. Initially you may want to tear off a small piece of cotton, soak it in the oil, and insert it into your belly button. use some medical tape to ensure that it stays there all day.

The infection should be cured within 7-10 days, if not well before that.

    Good luck!

I agree with Ambermoon, ignore the idiots and trolls. This happens. You can clean your bellybutton with a lotion (baby lotion is good and gentle) and Q-tips. Then apply a gentle deodorant like Dry Idea. Let it rest for a bit, then wipe the surface with a cloth (NOT a Q-tip). See how that works. If you have a deep belly button, you might try an occasional anti-fungal, but I don't think that will be necessary.

The easiest thing to do is buy a box of alcohol wipes (in the diabetic isle) and use them when you have an outbreak or a couple of times a week if it's all the time. It will sting for a moment if you have broken skin, but stand in front of a fan or fan yourself with something. It happens all of the time to chubby people (like me) and I end up breaking the skin if I check on it too often. Remember, that skin is thinner than the skin under your eyes and can be irritated even easier.

Use deadorant (antipersperant not just the scented crap)

Just put it on the affected area (preferably immediately after you've showered and dried/cleaned the area) and then you should be fine.

I always take a little bit of the deodorant on my finger and swipe it inside my belly button (and under my massive tata's) just to keep the sweat minimal because I hate the feeling of sweat.

NOTE: If you're using antiperspirant/deodorant in a noticeable place remember they did invent INVISIBLE versions.

I totally agree with this person.

ashleychan94 (31016) 2009-11-09 06:31:46 Yeah, I almost gagged too. Literally. There has been research done on that, actually. And I am positive this is the reason. Sometimes when you are born and the umbilical cord is cut between you and your mother, it can leave a tiny hole in your bellybutton, therefore sometimes bodily fluids (like, stuff inside your body) just sometimes leaks out. You could try asking your parents why they had to do such a freiken' bad job at cutting your umbilical cord, lol. But seriously, that is your very accurate and possible explanation.

Those with stinky belly button had a very deep one. When i was a kid, I have had a normal belly button but as a kid(I dont know what I'm doing), I always dig it with a match- its like I'm cleaning. As time goes by, I realized it was already so deep. And i think touching the belly button with hard things should be avoided. There's a tiny hole there(I think) were some fluids are leaking out. For me, I think the umbilical cord should be tighten up or something like that. I'll try to find out.
Even if I'm swimming or having a bath (soaking my body in water), I could feel some water are going inside my belly button, too. Weird but its true. I usually have an upset belly after swimming. I should go and see a Dr. soon. :)

Don't pick at it. You've scratched your belly button, and it's gotten infected. Picking at it makes it worse. Just clean it gently with a washcloth in the shower daily, and keep it dry otherwise. In a few weeks it will go away. It's annoying, I know, but if you keep your fingers out of your belly button, it shouldn't be a problem ever again. I haven't had this issue in a few years.

My bellybutton is pierced and it smells through my shirt only sometimes it's pretty rare but that could be an entirely different reason. I agree with the yeast infection, I remember something like that happened to my friend. Good luck! And whoever pugetbreeze(?) is it wasn't really necessary for you to be so rude, it's not funny and it doesn't make you any better of a person so don't act like that unless its someone who enjoys letting you be rude to them.

If you have a piercing like i do, warm salt water in a cup, put it over you belly button and shake it to clean it, then Hydrogen peroxide and do that TWICE a day. keep it dry at all times :)

a few times ive stuck my finger in my belly button to find a smelly substance on the end of my finger afterwards.
however if you hold your nose and then lick the goo from your finger you will be surprised at how much it tastes like chicken.
dont believe me? then try it.

you could use all the soap in the world but if you dont dry properly you'd still get it, why not try an experiment where you wash yours and then dont dry and see what happens.

  • Yeah, I almost gagged too.

    I'll admit, this story made me friggin' gag and want to throw up - and believe me, it takes a LOT to do that. Sure my belly button gets a bit smelly after a few days without showering, but never is there "juice" or "crust". Even writing that I nearly threw up. Sorry to be so blunt. So no, I don't think it's normal. See a doctor, clean it more often and for fuck sake, DON'T TELL US ABOUT IT! : {

Take no notice of the idiotic and horrible comments posted here. Sometimes if you have a deep belly button this happens because it can get very warm in there bacetria develop. It isn't anything to do with not washing although certainly being extra scrupilous about hygiene will help. Go see your GP as it sounds like you have a fungal infection dont be embarresed he will have seen far worse than this believe me.
