Stereotypes, prejudices and differences

So I'm in college and we are learning about poetry during the Civil Rights Movement and it's very interesting to me because I'm learning so much more on the subject.

I realize people my age and in my generation really don't have much memory of the days of segregation. I don't believe I'm "racially aware" because I don't care what color or background you are I welcome all in my home and life, and try to never judge anyone until I get to know them. However I see racism everyday. Even myself being white have felt like I have been a victim of racism in some instances of my life. Particulary when I was a child and lived in a predominately black area.

People are racist in chinese and japanese restuarants by making fun of them or talking crap about them but yet they choose to eat there. While I see white boys using derrogatory words for black people or judge them all the same but then get in their stupid chevy trucks or POS car and blare the rap music. WTF is up with that?

Another thing that bothers me is people judge you by the way you appear, or even how much money you have? Why is this socially acceptable?

I don't know I don't get it, but what I'm getting at is can America really become a real multi-cultural society? Is it really normal for people to think they actually can learn to live together the way we have been? After centuries of being a country why is race still even an issue?

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Racism is ignorance. I live in the South and racism is rampant. I remember the bad old days in the fiftes and sixties. I think things are better now but it will never end entirely. Hatred just takes too much energy.

  • The problem in my opinion is that people often equate racism with just one scenario.

They need to understand that ANYONE from any race can be a racist.

There is no one race that should be allowed to abuse any other race, for ANY reason.

  • Alright I am going to explain something now that will answer all your current and future questions on this matter. The majority always wins. There is no if, and or buts about it. Even if the majority is wrong the MAJORITY WINS.

Now that explained this here is how things work. The majority will always attack the minority and those who do not have a strong enough circle protecting them. Why generally if someone is a loner they will be fucked with A LOT.

Why having a decent circle of LOYAL friends is important. So lets say the majority says rape is ok and the minority says rape is wrong. Guess what, rape is OK. Is rape really ok? No but you wont have enough support to stop it and you will Ostracized for stating otherwise.

Someone is always fighting to be top dog and there is absolutely no reason to pity any minority group. Since when the minority becomes the majority the previous majority will suffer.

This goes on and on till you begin to wonder why anyone has rights anymore. People are not as a whole civilized enough to respect each other and so this will never end. This can be applied to ANY prejudice. Be is race, sexuality or religion and so on.

Now you ask why this is socially acceptable and the answer is because 80percent of the population is not mature, they are not civilized and they are not Intelligent enough to realize simply being different does not equal bad. Do you know how rare it is to find someone who wont sit around and pick on SOMEONE and this could be the same person that claims to be TOLERANT and are tolerant on some accounts but completely intolerant on other points.

  • Racism will be around for a long time to come, and yes in Canada where you get all types of people from all types of cultures it's bound to happen. As a white person I try not to judge people by their colour but by their behaviour. This to me is the most just way to deal w/people and it brings fairness to the situation.

  • Differences is general. So we should keep the differences based on mutual understading.

  • Hey V, haven't seen you in a long time. DO you even remember me?

Racism is retarded, I hate it, it doesn't even make sense. Theres alot of joke racism out there though, which I don't really mind, it's when it's serious it's bad. Like because theres only 2 English ppl in my new school (me and one other guy that has been here since he was 5 so hes pretty much American) a lot of ppl comment on me being English and make jokes about that, which I don't mind, cuz I know it's not serious.

If someone is poor and your rich you shouldn't think that they are inferior to you, you should help them out.

The only people that are inferior in this world are those that feel like they are superior. If you feel like you are superior then your mind are blinded through that and so you can not be superior if your mind is filled with false truths. those that really are superior to others possess the humility to believe that they are equals.

  • Do you know why this still exists? Because people are stupid, and that will never change. Not just in America either. Human nature is self-centered and arrogant, among other choice words.

Until we can actually breed intelligent people, it doesn't look like anything will be changing soon, I'm afraid.

    • Yes, just what I was going to say - it's stupidity. However, it's not a matter of "breeding" intelligent people to eradicate the problem (that idea is also stupid); it is a matter of education and awareness.

There will always be ignorance, but as long as there is reason, it can be called out and crushed.

As long as there are people who can look upon ignorance and exclaim "WTF?!" there is hope.

        • Lol don't worry. Much of the time, I write in a style that appears to show that I am serious, but really, I'm just being...I have no idea what the hell I'm being. Sarcastic? Not quite. Ironic? I don't know; it's like I have my own private joke with myself to for my own private amusement.

I appreciate your humour and your use of the phrase "serious business." That is always a good sign. But I'm still not your friend.

          • That's not to say that I'm not serious at all. Ignorance that leads to prejudice and pain is always going to be something that I view very seriously.

Serious business? No, I don't think that everyone finds it very fun, but I think that it would do the world some good if more people took a look around themselves and actually SEE. Wake up. We've come so far, but no where near far enough.

With a new year and yet more failures on the part of our so-called "leaders," I guess I'm feeling slightly angry. More people need to get angry, I think. No, I'm not drunk tonight. Just ranting to myself. Things like this just seem more important than ever right now.

  • Not really, Germany and Italy unify during the 19th century. Poland was created after World War One. Actually as the result of WWI and WWII many new countries appeared in Europe.
