it may have been a quick cheap way to solve production problems, but id argue closer on the side of just how robing a bank is a quick way to solve your money issues, there are a lot of wrong things that can solve problems, not saying you're saying that makes the Wong thing right. but I'm struggling to see the direction of your question here, are you asking if having people work for you for free is good for business aside from the ethical standpoint just simply does it make things happen....i mean .. it seems pretty obvious that yes enslaving people will save you money and get the things you need done, done. Rather selfish, right?

Yep. As we know, slavery has been around, in many cultures and civilizations, for a very long time, and since before white people were a big deal.

It's a basic, practical and straightforward concept. It's the perfect solution for certain situations, provided you don't have this nagging thing called empathy, that is.

Looking at Africa, that is still being done by kings and tribal chiefs. Only they know how to make people believe it is normal.

The overwhelming majority of people are still enslaved. All races. It's just that instead of housing and feeding you directly, you get a measly paycheck to barely cover these costs yourself.

Don't kid yourself. Slavery is alive and well. Freedom is just an illusion.
