Son has changed a lot. is it normal?

My son is 17 years old. He is chirpy, enthusiastic and pleasant. Well he was until 6 months ago. Don't get me wrong, he still has manners and is kind but he doesn't even go out anymore, he'll only go to work or college. All he does is play video games, study and nothing else. He doesn't eat much, just sort of plays with his food and will say "i'm trying" and end up getting really frustrated. Is his behaviour normal? What could have triggered it?

its not drugs. I just went through this myself. being 22 now. From my own drug experience all they did was make my life better. More friends more fun just better social fun life all together. He's depressed. could be several reasons. Getting older, growing up, college work, No true friends, no girl attention, could be feeling new emotions he has never felt before and there bringing him down.

He sounds like he's been hurt by someone.. I don't think it's drugs by any means. I acted sort of like this when I was dumped. There is definitely an open wound there if he gets frustrated easily by little things. Just be there for him. Sometimes it's good to talk about it so maybe confront him about how he's been acting.

He's gay. "chirpy, enthusiastic and pleasant." Still "minds his manners" at 17. AND his best friend is female??? Do the math. He is probably struggling with it.

    • You're basing this off stereotypes. He is far from gay, his room is booby palace. He has girlfriends before.
Anyway, i've made him tell me, with a bit of bribing. Its about a girl, not about his sexuality.

  • I've made him tell me, it took a bit of bribing, but I got there. Thank you to everybody for contributing.

    • Me? No. I have no idea who you are talking about. I'm a woman as well. I have no idea where you got that idea from.

He was definitely hurt by someone. Maybe he likes a girl and she doesn't like him back, or maybe he's lonely. It's normal.

Are you sure he's not on drugs? Has some floozy broken his heart?

He does sound a little old to be hormonal - but maybe not!?

    • He shows no signs of being on drugs. He hasn't had a girlfriend in about a year, but theres a chance you could be right (about the "floozy"). His best friend is female and such so I wouldn't rule out that possibility.

Why is your son 17 and in college? Anyway it sounds like he is depressed, you should have a heart to heart with him.

    First comment yeah buddy.

    • In England we finish school at 16 and then we go to university or college (Sixth form) You can go to college at any age.
I try to talk to him but he always says nothing is wrong. I guess I could try again.

He could have a late birthday, like a September, October, November, or December birthday.
