It's normal, but there's a couple of things you might want to consider which might help you understand.
I'm a white male, much as you are, but I live in a society (Thailand), where white males of European decent are the exception, not the norm.
I'm from England, so there I'm part of the majority ethinc group. Here, howver, I'm not. In fact (and I gotta tell you, it's very uncomfortable), I'm an ethnic minority.
White male ethnic minority.
Strange? Yes, it is.
However, that is how it is, and, as much as I don't like it (I've never much considered anyone's colour before their character before) that's just the way it is.
So, maybe, they look at you from a minority ethnic point of view, towards someone who is from the ethnic majority.
You might not see it, but they are aware of it.
Next time, perhaps spend a bit more time showing your sensitive personality, that you understnad why they migh tfeel a bit anti )initially) to a white guy showing interest in them, and being a bit more forgiving of their worries.
