I have had the same problem with sleep paralysis. People who make stupid jokes about it have never experienced it and can't understand how terrifying it can be. I was once seriously sleep deprived for weeks because it happened every single time I went to sleep.
You have to learn to accept that it's just a physical problem and learn NOT to be afraid. That's easier said then done, but if you can get to the point where you can relax and just tell yourself to go back to sleep, it will pass.
It helps to learn something about lucid dreaming. You just have to be able to take control of the situation and not let it control you.
