It is probably sleep paralysis. It can cause hallucinations and stuff. You'll dream half awake and unable to move. Historically it's described as encounters wih demons and incubus and succubus or the lady in black that paralyzes you and steals your soul in your sleep. But what you described is the most common description of sleep paralysis. Shadows, foot steps, inability to move or 'wake up' even though you feel awake. Some people even put an alien abduction theme over it, with their mind trying to scramble and explain what is happening.
