Saying hi to the wrong guy can cause yourself a lot of grief. You might just be being genuinely nice but too many other guys before you had other intentions. It gets old fast and it can even be dangerous, so sparing your feelings is not a higher priority than avoiding the consequences of engaging with a scumbag.
They can tell by the way you interact with them. I just had a similar issue. Socially, I was just making conversation, but she caught on to me thinking she's cute. Her mistake, however, was to think I was hitting on her. Attractive women just need to understand not all attention is bad or with ulterior motives.
