Sinister thoughts pop into my head

Recently I have these thoughts pop into my head and it downright scares the heck outta me. Things I couldn't possibly imagine but suddenly see it in great detail.
For example.
Like my adorable 7 month old pup is sitting beside me and I'm cutting off loose threads on his toy. And suddenly a clear image comes into my head of me just suddenly cut off his ear.
This freaks me out and I haven't picked up scissors since. The image of that in my head was too clear and felt too real. Am I crazy? Should I get myself checked out? Like who has thoughts like these? Is it normal?

Intrusive thoughts. Did you know president Lincoln refused to use knives because he thought he’d stab himself.

It’s weird and nonsensical for a person meant to be mentally stable enough to run a country

Everyone gets intrusive thoughts sometimes and it's usually pretty easy for people to dismiss most of them, although having a lot of intrusive thoughts that you can't seem to dismiss is a sign of OCD.

Intrusive thoughts are normal, just have the self control not to act on them.

It's actually quite normal - "intrusive thoughts". I have had very similar ones. The extent to which you fixate on them determines its normalcy. Practice mindfulness to keep them in check, otherwise you could have OCD if it consumes you

Ill be face to face with a boss at work and ill get this urge that im gonna spit in his face or punch him. Its really weird, it also causes me anxiety because I think "what if I accidentally do it"

Lol, I've had this, or just randomly screaming at someone! It's usually when I'm nervous and trying to make a good impression.

As others have said, having intrusive thoughts about harming a person or creature we care about (or yourself) is something that most people occasionally experience.

We've all got a very dark side hidden away down deep in our heads. Thoughts from there squirm their way up to the surface now and then, and it doesn't mean you're going nuts or need medication or psychiatric help.

I suggest you just acknowledge the thought, tell yourself firmly that it's something you'd never do, and move on.

In any case, what you thought of really wasn't all that ghastly, since many breeds of dogs used to routinely have their ears clipped. Maybe some memory of hearing or reading this popped up out of your subconscious and prompted the thought. It's not like you suddenly had the urge to take the scissors, disembowel the puppy, stab him in the eyes and pin him to the wall with the scissors.

I think your fear of thinking them makes you think of them more, because your brain is going to look for danger anyway. Stop fearing it. Instead, if they come, let them, and it should be less painful. You're not a bad person!
You can focus on what is really, presently there, smells, textures, sights, to stay distracted. But I promise that fearing these thoughts can make them worse. I'm sorry that you are getting them.

thanks so much for answering. The first reply got me worried. But seeing the rest of your answers have me a bit more relaxed and that I'm not the only person to have wild thoughts like that. Def scared me like crazy.

Yes, it's indeed pretty normal! I've had a couple of scary intrusive thoughts about hugging my (pretty small) cat too tightly to where it could harm him. I hate it!

Sometimes the less you worry about these thoughts or make them a big deal, the less they will occur. Look up "ironic processing"
