  • My friend has just closed his Facebook account and I'm on the brink of doing too. I never use it anyway so there's no point me being there.

We were talking about it last night. He said he closed the account because the level of inanity and attention-seeking desperation of status updates was making him judge the entire human race harshly.

Before Facebook, he wouldn't have believed someone would consider "Hannah is eating carrots now. OMG. lolz" as newsworthy enough to broadcast to every single person you know. He said that half the people he knows don't even know he got married last year, never mind what item of food he's currently consuming.

Hannah's status update was following by three comments all calling her "Sooooo crazy". I presume they were talking about carrot eating because, yeah, that's crazy. At least as crazy as using carrot eating as a method of seeking attention. Who knows, maybe that's what they meant. But somehow, I doubt it.

Another friend closed her Facebook account because she thought people just added friends in order to look popular, as if friends were somehow followers or your "audience". The obsession with being famous disgusted her. Also, she was a little miffed that she couldn't get more than 26 friends.
