Definitions are always supposed to describe meanings of words, and the meaning of words is defined by what that word means to most people you'll come across.
Personally, I think the definition resonates with my personal idea of what religion is.
But may I ask, why are you so stubborn about this issue? I've seen you deny atheism is a religion before, and your lack of acceptance to what is true interests me.
Perhaps it's because you do not wish to be labelled as 'religious'? Do you experience a negative feelings towards the word? Does the word make you uncomfortable in any way?
It makes me extremely uncomfortable to be labelled as religious when I am specifically NOT religious and do not wish to be labelled as such. It also annoys me a great deal when perfectly clear terms are mangled into incorrect meanings out of laziness and/or ignorance.
Are you suggesting that if most people I come across believed black was white, then that would make it so? Sorry, but that's rubbish
I point out that what "resonates" with you or anyone else has nothing to do with logic and that I am not refusing to accept something that is true, I am refusing to accept something that labels me as something I am not and with which I do not wish to be associated. You are refusing to accept that the meaning of the term atheist precludes any religious belief: ergo it cannot be a religion
I figured you'd say something like that. A lot of atheists hypocrytically think that they reserve the right to call theists religious, when actually they should look down and realise that they are too.
I do not know what your problem against the word is. Do you know? Could you tell me? It's just a word, you know.
Of course, you have the right to not be called what you are if it makes you comfortable. However that's like a person telling others to not call him human. He may wish to change the meaning of the word 'human' to his liking, but that doesn't change his identity - and he shouldn't enforce his own definition upon others, as you're not the only one living on this planet, Ms. Ellena.
You should just accept the meaning of the word - there's no reason not to. An atheist puts faith into his belief that there is in fact no God - despite being incapable of proving it. To me, and the majority of people you live with, that's a religious view.
So you know more about whether I'm religious than I do? I'm not enforcing anything on anyone, but you want to enforcer your definition of atheism on me and other atheists. I choose my own identity, thank you very much. Typical christian - it was the arrogance and intellectual causistry of christians like you who first caused me to question religion in general.
Faith has nothing whatsoever to do with my lack of belief in god, I used my brain to come to that conclusion over many years. I don't need to prove there's no god: if you or anyone else produces proof that there is one, I will reconsider my position.
Being human is an observable fact: are you seriously suggesting that's analagous to the beliefs I hold in my mind? Ooooh now I'm really worried: am I conversing with the allseeing allknowing god who can see what's inside my head? Reveal yourself if you exist and my brain will quite easily change my beliefs based on proof, not faith.
I have a better idea of what the word 'religion' means than you do. It's not my definition, it's the most common definition - why are you so stubborn?
You say you choose your identity. It's the same as choosing to be a police officer but saying you're not a 'police officer' and you choose your own title because you have the right to. That's well and good, but expect to be of an amusement to people who know you are a police officer!
How were you able to deduce that I was a Christian? Do you, like a lot of other atheists pay little to no attention to any beliefs that are not your own? Do you stick your fingers in your ears and chant? It almost seems like you're doing it now.
"Faith has nothing whatsoever to do with my lack of belief in god, I used my brain to come to that conclusion over many years. I don't need to prove there's no god: if you or anyone else produces proof that there is one, I will reconsider my position."
Well, faith has nothing whatsoever to do with my belief in God, I used my brain to come to that conclusion over many years. I don't need to prove there's a God: if you or anyone else produces proof that there isn't one, I will reconsider my position.
Can you see the weaknesses in your own statement? I tweaked it a bit to show you.
We both are incapable of proving our beliefs to one another, that is the constitutent of our faiths. Yet you stubbornly assume that you are correct, and that I am wrong. You have the right to do so, but it's childish and rather frustrating.
End of pointless debate. I'm quite happy to agree to disagree about this, resesrving my right to define myself however I choose and to allow you the same about yourself, but not about me or anyone else.
should religion be taught in public schools?
