Should i travel to conservative states in us?

I love travelling, I have been to a few states in America but it was a long, long time ago. Wondering if I could travel to conservative states like Texas, Alabama, etc as an Asian person peacfully without being a target of hate crime? I know quite a lot of white people may have some love/hate relationship with certain group of Asian due to media, trade war, history, etc so I just want to know if I can travel at ease? I live in California and being sheltered like most Asian are, I want to discover more about different side of America.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

You'll be totally fine! I spent quite a bit of time in the deep south, small towns too & the worst I saw was racist bumper stickers & Confederate flags. I never saw any open hostility or heard any racist comments. The people are generally very friendly, welcoming, helpful & chatty. You'll have less of a chance encountering any racism if you travel to cities too.

Even if you do run into a crazy ass racist person, American racists tend to have weird "favorable" stereotypes about asians...still ignorant as fuck, but they'll usually peg you as being quiet, hard working & smart...so I would be very surprised if anyone was nasty to you.

It's really a beautiful part of the country. The people are generally lovely. The food is amazing. I'd say the chance of experiencing racism is about on par with anywhere else in the world.

      This.

My boyfriend lives in a small, rural, conservative town and while there is definitely racism (cos humans...ugh) there is reasonably large Asian population (mainly due to the nearby college but still). To my knowledge, everyone is all Southern manners...I could be wrong. I never really asked the half Asian brother and sister I knew from that town what their experiences were growing up in a biracial family in the South.

Stick with the big cities and you'll be fine. I once traveled the back roads of Indiana and started seeing some scary racial shit.

Asians will have no hard time in America, mainly because public perception puts asians as the lowest amount of aggression.
Conservatives dont hate every single race besides white. We just dislike countries and groups not people. Show off as a good person and we will respect that. Chinas trade war wont impact Chinese person to person interactions it's more a buisness to buisness politics crap.
(Of course you could run into a racist or an asshole but the chances of running into one doesnt increase in the south it's just a blanket chance in America most people in America ain't assholes.)

I live in the south and I've never met a person in my life that says "i dont like black people" or "i dont like asians". Its a different country right now. People dont care about that anymore.

  • For fucks sake, dude, are you really serious???? I've lived in bama, new orleans, kentucky, texas, and I can tell you that the south is by far the LEAST racist toward asians. There is a difference though, depending on what part if Asia you're from. East asians are quite well liked down south but Indians will get a slight resentment because of all the annoying telemarketing calls we get. 'Hllo sir, this is Raj. Can I have your social securrrrity numbah? What the prrrroblem is herrre?"

No, man I promise that no matter what area you come from as long as you are polite and respectful no one will treat you poorly. And if someone does I think there will be 10 more defending you. Stop watching CNN please.

On one of my road trips through Alabama, a guy saw my rental car license plate and thought I was from Texas. He was super friendly. When he found out I was from California, he was still really friendly but a little more standoffish. That's probably about the worst you can expect.

  • I'd actually say Asians are the least disliked racial group in America, and they seem to have a reputation for being successful immigrants and not causing trouble in the West.

The worst I've heard most complain about Asians is penny pinching, and being stingy with serving portions in their restaurants.

The issues with the countries of China and North Korea are generally separated from Asian visitors.

Also, I'm a minority who was born in and has lived in Texas for my entire life, in largely white, rural and suburban areas. No one has been mean or racist in public to me, and no one that I know has had a serious problem with racism here.

I grew up in Houston, Texas, and there are lots of Asian people in Houston. Houston actually has two Chinatowns.

You'll be ok. I was in the US and I'm Bulgarian.

Our stereotype is ex-communist, or still communist/ wannabe gopnik. It's not like that. I met some wonderful people. Everyone was welcoming, everyone was very nice. I loved my stay in the States. I was never judged and quite a few people were actually interested in learning more about the little, old, Eastern European country I'm from.

I live in suburbs and leave my doors unlocked. I work in the city and carry a pocket knife bc I work late. People aren't racist. But some places just aren't safe.

Racism is a factor all over the U.S., but it doesn't matter what you are if you're caught in the middle of nowhere, because most out there are bored, territorial, and generally have a hate for everyone that they aren't familiar with.

My advice would be to travel with a trusted friend who has travelled before, or at least got your back if shit gets rough. Also, go to gun range and learn to hold/load/aim a gun as well as buy one, because if you're planning on exploring rural America, you may need it for protection.

I only know of two racists. They're both old pieces of shit. You shouldn't generalize. You're just spreading more hate.

Most doesn't mean all, but okay.

I'm not sure why you two are so offended if you're part of the few nice people? Better yet, why hasn't anyone asked me what I've experienced that made me so scared and cautious?

I'm sorry if you took my comment personally as if I'm directly speaking to you. However, I rather this person who claims to be sheltered, travel carefully. At least if he expects the worse, he/she will appreciate you and donteatstuff more; and when trouble does come his/her way, at least he/she is ready especially in places that might not have signal to call for help.

Most people think like you. It's not upsetting anymore because so often people just say "Americans are racist". As an American, I should be offended. But what random peeps from the web have to say doesn't phase me so easily.

You're contradicting. If my comment didn't FAZE you, then you would have simply ignored it and moved on.

It's startling how quickly you turned to anger, going straight to insults and apathy. This is the kind of behavior I'm use to, especially when I travel. My original comment never focus on race, yet you're making it about race.

If you claim bullshit, then you probably met some nice people in rural areas, which I hope everyone can experience.

As for my advice, I'm always cautious everywhere I go, especially after bad shit has happened previously.

            Nice! I'm glad you're a good person.

No one can please everyone. I would love if being polite and courteous would be enough for universal acceptance, but... you know how the world is. Nice people are indeed everywhere, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared for those who aren't as nice.

    • You have no clue what you are talking about. I'm a white man from selma alabama and I have never seen racism here the way I've seen it in europe. You really believe the liberal shit CNN feeds you huh?

My next door neighbor is black. I call him my pet nigger and he calls me his white bitch. We laugh about it and eat barbecue a few times a year. He watches my property and I watch his. My niece dated his son.

But little tealights believes the bullshit the media has fed her. Before you comment about a place or people, go there. You might offend some people or at least perpetuate a stereotype.

Travel with a friend? I can tell you from experience that you are better off just meeting someone here to hang around with. They could at least tell you the do's and dont do's.

Theres a very disproportionate amount of crime and especially violent crime in the south, but it isn't racist crime. I can honestly say that while I've seen several violent crimes in my life living in the deep south, but have never seen one that was racially motivated.

      Please stop watching CNN.

So... instead of providing proof of your blatant lie about me, you instead ignore it and make another comment to fuel your weird political/racial propaganda again.

Look, you're probably an alright person, but... you assume way too much. I just had negative experiences in my travels, and though unfortunate, it happens. It's okay that you dislike my opinion, but don't make up fake information about me to prove a point. That's it. Say whatever crazy nonsense you want and downvote me to oblivion, I'm done here.

OP, always be safe in your travels; there's no harm in being prepared.
