If you do not feel safe break up via text it's fine since he has anger issues, most people say its cowardly but in this day and age texting IS a proper way to break up. I broke up with my bf via text and he called me a coward, I could have called but I know myself and would never had been able to fully explain my reasons, would have gotten tongue tied. He was very manipulative as well so in person would have been a bad idea. It's okay to feel you "owe" him a better break up but my bf lied to me and broke promises as well so in fact fuck him.
