Should america’s voting age be lowered to 16 or raised to 21 years old?

Just wondering if America would ever change their voting age requirements?

Lower the Voting age to 16 18
Raise it to 21 25
Keep it Age 18 22
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

i would also say 25. 'adulthood' itself could be moved to 25 rather than 18 with the way most people between those ages act these days, but i guess that's another matter

      • It seems ridiculous for someone to require parental or guardian permission or signing get an apartment, buy insurance, decide to be treated by a doctor or dentist, open a personal bank account, or basically do most important things involving legal contracts past 18 (high school age).

Many people 18+ are employed and living separately from their guardians. Adulthood being moved to 25 would inhibit people from becoming independent and moving on with their lives, and would be a pointless pain in the ass for both the minors and their guardians.

25 is definitely a good age to vote. At 25, no doubt some got a taste of the working world just enough to know what's bullshit and what needs to change.

When I voted at 18 all I was thinking about was patriotism and how it's my civic duty; I didn't fully understand what each candidate stood for and just agreed with my family's beliefs as they cheered about how proud they were for me to vote for the first time.

Yeah, the law requiring a street address to vote in the state with a lot Native American reservations without street addresses definitely wasn’t targeting the Native Americans. If you don’t understand how republicans use voter ID laws to target groups that vote democrat, you haven’t been paying attention, which means you’re probably also unaware of how they close as many polling stations as they can in democrat heavy locations to make voting as difficult as possible for the ones they can’t stop from registering.

What does the size of the group have to do with anything? They have just as much of a right to vote as anybody else, and it’s enough votes to matter in local and state elections. Plus your claim that it doesn’t matter who the president is, when we’re talking about(among others) the Standing Rock reservation and the atrocities that happened there, is absurd.

But then again the voters should go through a mental screening and depending on thier results they should be allowed to vote. No metter if they're 12 or 100 if they pass they should be allowed to vote.

Rather have it at 18. If you can serve your country in combat then you can vote for her. 18-21 is marked as the Alpha stage in recruits (at least that what the navy called us) where we were at the prime of our lives physically without much training.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • Boojum

The military has always tried to suck in men in that age range, but not just because they're in their physical prime. At that age, the frontal lobes of their brains haven't finished developing, so they believe they're invincible, they have low empathy, and they're easy to indoctrinate into the military mindset.

(BTW, I speak as a USN vet who signed up when I was 19. For some reason - I guess my genes or my upbringing - I never bought into all the military BS, and I managed to do the minimum necessary to keep my nose clean and get regular promotions for nearly a decade.)

  • Skarmatic

Unpopular opinion apparently, but I believe the voting age should be 16. People don't give enough credit to teenagers from personal experience. A good portion of them are politically educated and their future is based upon who is elected. But then again, 16 year olds can be immature, just like some 25 year olds who vote. Anyone can be immature. Our future depends on kids and 16 is an age where I believe kids start transitioning into adulthood and having their own individual mindset. It's a yes from me.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • LloydAsher

Being able to vote is the states recognition that the person is an adult and can make all the adult decisions for themselves. If you change the voting age to 16 you are also going to have to question the age of consent and other kinds of privlages. Will 16 suddenly be the new age to become an adult?

18 year olds are still kids but they can mostly own up to their shit. Plus they can serve in the military so thats the primary reason that its 18 and not 21 like it used to be.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • Skarmatic

Some ages the age of consent is 16 so it's still an odd boundary right now to answer that question. At 16 (in most areas) you're able to get your license and be able to start driving at 15. But voting affects children still in the womb, children, teenagers, adults, elders, literally everyone. I think 16 is the right development age to be able to make those decisions.

Plenty of 18 year olds I know can own up to their shit, and some still can't, same with 16 year olds. Military should not be the primary focus for voting especially since there's so many factors within.

I don't think there's any way to measure someone's maturity...

Possibly with that idea in mind though, maybe 16 year olds would have to go through a more intensive process, same concept as drivers ed with younger people wanting to learn to drive.

Don't forget the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18 because people were able to be drafted at age 18 but not vote. Increasing the voting age would take that voice away. People between 18 and 25 need to be more involved in politics and do their research before voting.

Alright... 110 years ago a group of Finnish farmers decided that America might be better than Finland for long term growth. They spent all of thier money to get the proper paperwork and shipping for themselves to get to a port of entry. As it turns out ww1 America needed more farmers so they got accepted into America. They learned English and stayed relatively poor for the last 80 years until my fathers generation.

          What's the difference now???

Well you got people showing up on a whim and expecting to be accepted into America without any paperwork about who they are. All they want to do it be caught by border control so they go to court and THEN RUN THE FUCK AWAY FROM COURT THIS HAPPENS 90% OF THE TIME! My ancestors did it legitimately 100+ years ago during the great fucking war what is thier excuse? Also might add they were Finnish thus they knew only Finnish and a little Russian. Finnish is the hardest European language for English speakers and vice versa my family tried thier very hardest and learned enough English to get by then sent thier kids to public school to pick up English naturally.

Whereas, voting is making a decision that theoretically has the potential to cause a wider negative effect, as it's about what's best your country.
