Shitty, pessimistic mentality

Some people have this mentality of, "one person isn't going to be able to make that much of a difference, so why bother?"

They use that argument against vegetarians. They use it as an excuse for not recycling. They use it as an excuse not to vote, not to donate to good causes, and to block out things they'd rather not hear.

The sum of all those things, above all, is that they use that shitty mentality to be lazy and selfish.

An annoying part is that most refuse to be honest about it.

It's a mentality that I absolutely despise. It's not that they don't have a point; individuals are limited.

However, even if little good comes from making an effort to change things, NO good comes from being even a somewhat insignificant part of the problem.

In fact, that way of thinking is destructive to everyone and everything. It's perhaps the only thing that is truly worthless and pointless.

Most of the time, you don't gain 10 pounds because of severe binging. Letting yourself go is a transition, and I believe the fault lies with thinking things like, "Just one more cookie isn't that much," and then another.

You might as well throw that cup out of your car window, because "it's only a little compared to the large landscape".

That's how roadsides get trashed with litter, not from the collective masses making a conscious decision to pour their garbage bags on their once beautiful land.

How many individual days do you have to lay to waste before you realize that it's really your life wasting away?

One of my favorite quotes is, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Btw, I consider myself more of a realist than an idealist.

Some pessimistic people always try to use the excuse "I'm just being real". What they don't get is that realism and pessimism are not necessarily the same thing. Yes, bad shit happens and you are living in a bubble when you think that everything is ok. But, there is such a thing as going too far the other way when you insist on always carrying the attitude that everything sucks and everything is going to go wrong.

  • Some people don’t do some of those things for other reasons though. My friend doesn’t vote because it’s against her religion.

    • I was only referring to people who really have no reason. Curious, is it against her religion for a female to vote?

      • No. Her parents don't vote either.

When I hear people griping about something like the economy I always ask if they voted. If they say no I tell them they have no right to bitch.

In a free country you have the right to bitch about whatever you want, regardless of circumstance.

I divide the collective result by the total effort. If the payoff is good, I'm all in favor of participating. If not, starry eyed idealists are victims of their own ineptitude at math.

That's funny, cause one of my pet peeves is people who worry about what other people do. It typically means they secretly hate themselves and so they focus on others, and try to make them as miserable as they are.

My goal is to keep my side of the street clean and give others the courtesy of living their own life.

    • Is that directed at me? I don't discuss my morals with people irl, unless they ask, or we're in a conversation.

But this is the internet, so I can voice my irritations with other people without being too overbearing.

This disease of a mentality affects more than just the people who have it, though.

It was just my response to your post if you are OP.

Your words just brought out that reaction. The thought that I never care what others do unless they impose on or judge me.
