Shitty, pessimistic mentality
Some people have this mentality of, "one person isn't going to be able to make that much of a difference, so why bother?"
They use that argument against vegetarians. They use it as an excuse for not recycling. They use it as an excuse not to vote, not to donate to good causes, and to block out things they'd rather not hear.
The sum of all those things, above all, is that they use that shitty mentality to be lazy and selfish.
An annoying part is that most refuse to be honest about it.
It's a mentality that I absolutely despise. It's not that they don't have a point; individuals are limited.
However, even if little good comes from making an effort to change things, NO good comes from being even a somewhat insignificant part of the problem.
In fact, that way of thinking is destructive to everyone and everything. It's perhaps the only thing that is truly worthless and pointless.
Most of the time, you don't gain 10 pounds because of severe binging. Letting yourself go is a transition, and I believe the fault lies with thinking things like, "Just one more cookie isn't that much," and then another.
You might as well throw that cup out of your car window, because "it's only a little compared to the large landscape".
That's how roadsides get trashed with litter, not from the collective masses making a conscious decision to pour their garbage bags on their once beautiful land.
How many individual days do you have to lay to waste before you realize that it's really your life wasting away?
One of my favorite quotes is, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Btw, I consider myself more of a realist than an idealist.
