Basically, he developed a habit of cuddling his girlfriend while sleeping, which is normal. Probably the moment he wakes up little and notice he's cuddling the wrong girl are the moments he turns and hold his girlfriend.
Anyway, I've noticed you keep repeating how comfortable, platonic, or no feelings; but just saying it once is enough. Unnecessarily repeating things means you're trying to convince yourself that it's true. You may like the guy, and should sleep on the sofa so it doesn't escalate, since he can't really control himself in his sleep.
