I compulsively do nice things for people anonymously because it makes me feel so uncomfortable and embarrassed when they try to thank me.
I'll leave typed, inspirational notes for people in places I know they'll look. I'll leave money, gifts, giftcards, pay for people's food in a drivethru, stuff like that, just whatever I've noticed the person needs/enjoys.
Once when I was in college, I had this amazing instructor who was just having a really bad month, like her life was just shitting on her. So I typed this page long note and left it in her mailbox. She came to class the next day, with a boombox (I kid you not) playing "dont worry be happy" and smiling and laughing. She took like ten minutes out of class to talk about this amazing note she got and how it's changed her life. And I'm sitting there intentionally looking just as inspired and clueless as the rest of the class.
I've done this a few times to people. It feels so amazing to know they'll never know it was me, just that someone out there cares and loves them.
