Freedom of speech means freedom of expressing your opinion. Regardless if it's insulting or not. Insulting and offending doesn't equal oppressing. As long as you're not imposing your ideas on others you can criticize as much as you want. Because it will always remain in the debate/argument stage. Unless people grow a brain and realize that everybody has their own opinion and learn to accept it.
And still, you failed to focus on the real issue of this post. Like the title says, why are people tolerant to freedom of speech , until it comes to gay people? You didn't address that. That is the question. Not what is and isn't freedom of speech and all it's negative side effects.

No. Just because you feel discomfort when confronted with opposing ideas, does not mean any idea is being imposed on you. I think the discomfort you feel is much more likely to be cognitive dissonance - the realisation that simple logic undermines your fundamental prejudices. That's not just conjecture. It's pretty easy to find evidence that you're spouting hot air. If you truly don't mind non-imposing criticism of your ideas, you wouldn't have responded to me as defensively as you have.

Preservation of free speech is best served by the opposing party saying, "I can accept that you think I am scum, and deserve to die. In return, you should accept that I think you should go fuck yourself."
