Save a life?
Long story. I'll keep it short.
I was driving home one day. I saw a drunk man staggering down the road. Don't stop. Don't help. He's just a drunk.
I got about half a km (1/4 mile for the freedom unit folks) and looked in the rear view mirror, only to see him collapse and roll into the drain.
I continued driving. I couldn't help but think I was wrong. So I turned around and went back. By the time I got to him, he was not breathing, and his pulse was not detectable.
(EDIT) in my revising this I removed the description of performing CPR. (EDIT)
I cracked his ribs. I am completely sure I did. Cars drove past, nobody stopped or even slowed down.
He began breathing again. Although weak, he got up, and asked for a cigarette. I refused, and told him I had called an ambulance.
(Sorry this is as short as I can make this story)
He continued to try walking, so I offered him a cigarette if he would wait for help. I rolled the smallest thinnest cigarette you ever saw.
When the ambulance arrived, they would only take him to the closest hospital. He did not want to go there, so I took one of the paramedics aside and told them I would take him to the hospital he wanted. They said this was a bad idea as I did not have any medical equipment or knowledge.
Cut longer story short. I ended up driving him to the hospital. I went with him into triage where the nurse told me he had multiple broken ribs and multiple fractures to his scull
I left him with a buisness card. He rang me a week later with no recollection of what happened. I told him, I saved your life. Sorry if I broke your ribs.
I still feel I could have done better.
