  • A lot of mistakes that creative people make, authors, artists and whatnot, is to base how they should feel about their work on other people's reactions. The problem with this is that the finer details are invisible to people who aren't trained to find them. This is two sided in that it makes good work have a glass ceiling for most people's approval, but also makes it such that shoddy work can still be popular.

It's an understandable trap to be caught in; nothing feels better than getting another person's approval. However, if the approval comes from someone who's biased towards you, they may be doing you a disservice if they don't find anything to critique. There's a distinct difference between work that is made to be well done, and work that is made to be popular. The best way to spot it is to get opinions from trained eyes that you can trust.

The long and short of it is that whatever kind of creative work you do, you should do it out of love. Doing it for approval may be a way to earn you money, but the best things in life can't be bought. Work for yourself in these matters. Do what you have to do to be satisfied with what you've done.

Love what you do, and seek improvement within yourself.
