Relapses can become part of a person's story but they do not have to happen. The truth is that when a person relapses they want to use/drink more than they want to be clean/sober. When you are new there is a lot of chaos and cravings. As one builds time the benefits act as a deterrent to picking up again. You don't want to lose what you have gained. Make a personal commitment not to pick up. It is not that you can't, but that you choose not to.
