You sound like me. Complete book/science/maths-head who couldn't get a foothold with chemistry. Then it clicked overnight and I suddenly understood it. I love it almost as much as physics now. But nothing will ever beat maths.
The beauty with it is you either get it or you don't, you can't waffle your way through like in an English essay. Although Maths is the best, just because once you have the basic rules you can keep applying them to solve literally anything :D
Hehe, this could have come out of my mouth. I feel exactly the same. My mum used to ask how I remembered all the laws and equations and stuff, but you have to remember virtually nothing. It all just flows from a very small set of axioms. :)
Regarding geeks and hipsters- Are you a geek?
