Yeah, lots of small rural towns in my state have prisons as the main employer. They purposely put them far from mass transit or large cities, and a lot of places don't really have much of an economy outside whoever runs the local stores or can actually make it as an independent farmer.
I've found just in my experience most people who are generationally into law enforcement (and people who like the taste of boot leather) grow up with and never grow out of this comic book mentality where criminals are generic bad people who just want to commit crimes because they're mean and the only ones who can stop them are the benevolent people on the side of the law. If you're working in a prison town everyone in 2nd grade knows that the prison is where the bad people go and the guards are all heroes. People like that tend to see anyone who calls their heroes into question, as somebody who's obviously a criminal. Because who else would question the HEROES that PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE EVERY DAY?
I don't understand why people saying this isn't exclusively a problem for black people are against reform. I guess it makes them feel safe to have cops allowed to do whatever they want. Nobody here is trying to get rid of law enforcement to make crime legal. That's a dumb thing to believe.
If you can't survive as an independent farmer then you don't know how to feed yourself. Please. Farming is simple. Raise veggies and chickens for eggs.
You need a pretty significant amount of land to be able to make a living off farming. It's hard work. The point is taking the easy way out and getting a job at the jail where you beat up people as a proxy for your spouse doesn't make you a hero.
The thing is, people generally believe that the justice system works well until they happen to find themselves in the cross-hairs. In fact, they _need_ to believe that, because we all have a need to believe that there's order in the world, if we follow the rules, we'll be safe and that those who violate the rules will be punished.
Unfortunately, the reality is that none of that is true, and the American criminal justice system is thoroughly borked. This is amply demonstrated by how the USA has the world's highest per capita prison population, the number of wealthy people who literally get away with grand larceny and even murder, and the number of people on death row who have been subsequently determined to be innocent of the crime they were convicted of.
Of course, well-educated, well-connected people with stable jobs and a solid social network of similar people are far less likely to end up on the wrong side of the law due to running into some cop who's trying to make his arrest or traffic ticket quota or looking for a reasonably plausible fall-guy for some crime. So such people will continue to believe that all is well, and it's only the Bad Guys who whine when cops just do their job.
Anyone saying that the protesters want to eliminate the police altogether is employing a straw-man argument. Whenever someone does that, it's a sign that they don't have more reasonable and more logical objections.

This is a perfect example of the problem. People who don't deal with police abuse like to imagine it's not a problem so they can keep licking boots and get super triggered at evidence of the issue.
It's an effective strawman, because most people don't think logically. The stereotype of somebody who doesn't like cops is a cartoon villian who wants to get rid of the police so he can be free to do all the crime he wants. People who don't really have any interactions with the legal system usually have a pretty high opinion of it working, and imagine people who have more experience dealing with it don't like it are "criminals"
who hate the cops for continually arresting them. Because obviously only criminals ever interact with the police.
I don't follow politics. I find that people that do tend to view everything as very black and white. Saying there are severe problems with the legal system is saying you want to completely disband all enforcement of basic laws and let everyone riot and loot and do whatever they want. The system works on their end, so therefore there's no problems with it. I had a user on here telling me I obviously support rioting because I won't support a corrupt system victimizing marginalized people in the name of public safety.
I had a couple friends crashed a car drunk and the passenger died years ago. The driver was charged with murder and given a 5-15 year sentence. Meanwhile an ex-cop around the same time ran over a disabled girl and was reported as driving erratically prior to it, he was allowed to turn himself in the next day (obviously after sobering up) and given 1-3 years for leaving the scene of an accident. This is a problem that has nothing to do with effective law enforcement and everything to do with protecting LEO's from the same consequences civilians have to face for their actions.
