I was in pretty much this situation once many years ago and I did nothing. It was only one bloke, a very drunk vietnam vet, verbally abusing a young asian man for reading a newspaper in his own language.
The train was fairly packed but no-one did anything until a couple of respectably dressed young blokes stood over the racist and told him to shut up. They must've called cops because he was taken off the train at the next station.
I can remember feeling ill that I wasn't brave enough to do anything and thinking that this was what happened to jews in the streets of germany and no-one did anything. I'm female by the way, and not good at physical confrontation, but I still regret I couldn't think of anything to do that evening because of my fear the drunk would turn on me
