There are just too many identities. From the perspective of North American socio-politics maybe it's really significant, but race relations differ between countries...

More details is better and Indians are more related to whites than to Chinese for example. Indian Subcontinent would've been more useful as I'm not sure a Pakistani or Bangladeshi would be so keen on calling themselves Indian.
