It's completely normal. All throughout high school, i barely spoke a word. I, too, was always told by teachers to contribute more, and i always got graded lower than other people in the contribution part of my reports. Im not a talkative person either, but that's usually because i cant relate to other people in my class and i generally have no interest in what they're saying lol.
Id say as long as you have a group of friends, find a place away from all the hustle-and-bustle to hang out. And in class, i think if you shouldnt worry about the teachers hassling you to contribute. You can contribute if the teachers ask a question, or maybe you can just put in your two-cents worth every now and then. :)
