Plan B stops ovulation, and/or prevents joining of the gametes, and/or prevents implantation in the uterine wall. It depends on the stage of your cycle as well as how quickly you take it.
It is definitely not an "abortion pill." (I'm not saying you called it that; I've just heard people misunderstand Plan B before.)
