It's NOT a universal holiday. Many religions/people don't celebrate it. I wouldn't say happy Chanukah or Happy Ede to you... why would you say Merry Christmas to me (I'm Jewish)? I don't celebrate it nor do many people. NOT universally celebrated.
You're right it's not a universal holiday, but in many countries - especially in Europe and Asia - it has essentially become a secular holiday. I'm an atheist, I celebrate Christmas, I wish people a Merry Christmas, as do the majority of atheists here in the UK and much of Western Europe.
If you're in a country where the majority of people celebrate a holiday at a particular time of year, you can expect people to say specific greetings to you.
For example, if I were in Israel during Hannukah, I wouldn't be surprised if people said Happy Hannukah to me, despite me not being Jewish. Would I be offended? No. I might mention that I don't celebrate it, but I wouldn't be a prick and say "Please don't say that to me!"

Sure, you'd prefer it, but you can't have everything the way you want all the time.
If someone you didn't know wished you a Merry Christmas on the 25th of December whilst you were out walking, would you be offended? Would you say Merry Christmas back? How would you react?
Hey you're perfectly entitled to dislike Christmas, or to dislike people wishing you a Merry Christmas - but at the same time, people who wish you a Merry Christmas are usually just doing so to be polite.
So there's no need for anybody to get 'bent out of shape' over such silly little things :)
