  • You can say Merry Christmas, but just don't say it to people who aren't Christian... why do you need to do that?

      • It's NOT a universal holiday. Many religions/people don't celebrate it. I wouldn't say happy Chanukah or Happy Ede to you... why would you say Merry Christmas to me (I'm Jewish)? I don't celebrate it nor do many people. NOT universally celebrated.

        • You're right it's not a universal holiday, but in many countries - especially in Europe and Asia - it has essentially become a secular holiday. I'm an atheist, I celebrate Christmas, I wish people a Merry Christmas, as do the majority of atheists here in the UK and much of Western Europe.

If you're in a country where the majority of people celebrate a holiday at a particular time of year, you can expect people to say specific greetings to you.

For example, if I were in Israel during Hannukah, I wouldn't be surprised if people said Happy Hannukah to me, despite me not being Jewish. Would I be offended? No. I might mention that I don't celebrate it, but I wouldn't be a prick and say "Please don't say that to me!"

          • I don't celebrate Christmas. I rather someone not say merry christmas to me. If you were in Israel, I'd hope people wouldn't assume since there are multiple religions there.

            • Sure, you'd prefer it, but you can't have everything the way you want all the time.

If someone you didn't know wished you a Merry Christmas on the 25th of December whilst you were out walking, would you be offended? Would you say Merry Christmas back? How would you react?
