I get waxed REGULARLY. I am a MtF trans woman bit still have my penis (Had testicles surgically removed). My esthetician is a cute young lady and she is freaking awesome. Trust me, the first time, hurts like a mother fucker! My advice is trim just a little first, and take to aspirin an hour before you get waxed. If you get it done at a salon, chances are the initial pain will deflate your boner quickly. If you stay on a regular schedule, 4-6 weeks the pain is relatively minor and the hair growth gets thinner. Shaving can cause ingrown hairs which can be painful, or they will look like welts of some sorts on your genital area and look like you have some nasty STD.
I was okay until I got home later that day, then the pain really started to kick in. Tried to tolerate the pain as much as possible and took the pain meds as little as possible. I definitely was not able to sleep on my stomach for a while. I pretty much had to sleep on my back, on the couch with a pillow between my thighs. After about a week the pain had subsided to nothing. Overall, It took me about 2 weeks to completely recover. As far as the surgery itself, I was awake because they used a topical anesthetic. I was able to feel the tugging and the pressure as the doctor was operating.
Hmm righton, totally worth it right? And yea that's an awkward feeling I had ingrown toenails once and it was the sane, it was numbed out but you could still feel it all
