Picking up used cigarettes?

I am so broke right now because I don't have a car or a job, and I'm a smoker, and I can not afford even cigarettes. So just about every day, I walk about 3/4 of a mile down the road from my apartment to where the shopping centers are; grocery store, quick trip, numerous other stores, and start walking around the parking lots of these places looking for half smoked cigarettes or even cigarettes with just a couple puffs left on them, and start picking them up and collecting them, putting them in my pocket. And I've seen people look at me while doing that, and I'm embarrassed about it. But I also need nicotine and this is the only way I can get it for free. Is walking around parking lots picking up cigarettes making me look like a bum to the people seeing me do this? And I know that they're not just thinking I dropped something because sometimes there may be 3 or 4 quarter or half cigarettes laying in the same little area and they're seeing me bend down again and again picking up the different cigarette bits. I know that the people seeing me do this are thinking I'm a dirty derelict, vagrant, hobo.

That's pathetic, you have a serious nicotine addiction.

    • I know, I wish I wasn't addicted to nicotine. So you think that the people seeing me do that think I'm a derelict bum?

Unfortunately yes, they probably think so.

Yeah its pretty normal when you're broke. You can either re roll them or just kinda run a lighter around the filter to kill off the mouth germs and stuff. Just avoid the ones with lipstick on them or that were sitting in puddles that dried up. its easy to tell.

I would be very surprised if SmokeEverything said, "No. Don't smoke those."

    • If you're addicted to nicotine, your body definitely does need it.

You need food, water and oxygen. You won't die from a lack of nicotine

Same here man I'm broke af haven't smoked a cigarette in a week now.
When you smoke try not to finish it completely leave about half a centimetre to a centimeter of tobacco and save them all in a jar and roll them into cigarettes when you domt have any that's what I do.

    • I had done that before. I had my last cigarettes yesterday at around 4:00pm. I bought some nicotine gum and have chewed numerous pieces already since. It is somewhat helping my cravings to smoke so far. I've decided to not smoke again and to just buy the gum now. It's time I start healing my lungs, and quitting smoking also improves circulation and reduces the chance of heart attacks or strokes, and I want to keep those chances low, so from now on it is only going to be the gum for a while. Then I'm going to stop nicotine altogether. But I'm not ready for that yet, the cravings will be too much.

You were mentioning that you haven't smoked for a week because you're broke? So I guess that you haven't been able to afford the gum either. You must be getting bad cravings, aren't you. When you get a little money again, are you going to buy some gum or will you keep smoking?

Is it normal? According to society probably not. But smoking is a serious addiction, and quite damaging to a person it makes me wonder why its even legal. But i really cant say much, as I've been a smoker in the past as well. I know your desperation, but just know that smoking wont solvw your deeper problems. In saying that, i have gone as far as smoking from people's ashtrays before but not as far as you have. But i can honestly say its not uncommon, where I am from, for people to not be able to afford to keep up with such an addiction, going as far as "butt hunting" in gutters. I can only hope that you don't directly smoke from other people's used cigarettes. At least swap out the filters and papers for new ones, and sanitize or wash your hands once you're about to take a puff. As i can only imagine how germy and potentially dangerous it could be to do that any other way

    • I see your points. I really want to quit smoking. I've read that within 24 hours after your last smoke, that the oxygen content in your blood is noticable higher. Yet, I feel worse. Is nicotine withdrawal really that bad that you'll really feel worse with a higher oxygen blood level but lower nicotine level?
