  • I'm unsure if what you say indicates serene detachment from the world and an ability to view problems in a mature, objective way, or if you just lack empathy.

I agree that people do get completely bent out of shape over the most trivial things. Some people are totally self-involved, and feel entitled to a idyllic, life where everyone panders to their every physical and emotional need.

I also believe that, when dealing with people, the only choice we have when it comes to their behavior is how we respond to it.

Unfortunately, most of us have to deal with people all the time, and many of us sooner or later need allies and supporters in our work and personal lives. So even from the perspective of pure self-interest, it's not wise to be completely indifferent the feelings of others, no matter how pathetic we may find them.

Personally, I've found that when I run in to one someone who sees themselves as a delicate flower, keeping my mouth shut is usually a viable option. If you really believe someone is pathetic, they aren't worth the time and trouble necessary to tell them this. It's not like expressing your opinion will change their view of the world, all it will change is their view of you.
