  • You're talking to a person who's *job* it is to work with kids. If you want to prove that you have a better idea than her about how young people's minds work, the facts are not on your side.

    • My developmental psychology was only a semester long and manyyears ago, I'm no expert, and I have not got the skills to work with at risk children...but I have a brain, common sense and the ability to read and use basic comprehension skills. And this silly little thing called compassion :P but fuck that shit, eh? EVERYONE SHOULD SHUT THE FUCK UP AND BOTTLE THAT SHIT DEEP INSIDE AND NEVER EVER SHOW WEAKNESS.

Cos we all know what good repression does ;)

But thanks for your comment, now I'm done with my sarcastic bitch.

    • Then she's personally a huge part of the problem. She and her ilk didn't exist several generations back, and look how much more psychologically strong the children were then. Nobody was offing themselves over a bit of bullying before her kind spread their poison.

      • Yeah, sure. Suicide is totally a thing of this generation.

I wasn't talking about normal every day life shit that we all need to deal with. I'm talking about people who maliciously attack others for their own personal gain.

And there has been plenty of evidence that the "suck it up, be tough, be a man" bullshit is psychologically damaging.

And I'll thank you to not blame me for a group of people whose thinking I do not share and have never shown any indication of sharing. I have never and never will advocate coddling. But I also refuse to ignore the fact that mental illness and psychological welfare are very real and very important.

Every generation whinges about how it was better in their day. The fact still remains that we make progress as well as mistakes, and just because you are callous and unkind, doesn't mean that showing any compassion is a weakpoint. Each generation faces different difficulties, and failure to acknowldge that different times have different needs is, quite frankly, fucking moroni and completely ignorant.

        • You're beating your head against a wall. This is someone who angrily lashed out and insulted someone for asking why a doctor's scale read different from their home scale.

When I asked him why he would do that, I became the subject of his anger.

His attacks on me were funny.

His attacks on the OP, not so much.

          • Yeah, you're right. I saw your "discussion" on that post, but kept out, seeing as he already thinks I seek out his comments so I can attack.

He sometimes has a fair point to make, but sometimes he's just wrong. And sometimes it's not something I can leave unchallenged. I don't see him as a bully, just someone who has absolutely no thought for individuals outside his immediate scope. It's actually sad.

But what would I know. Apparently :P

            • Hahaha!

I can relate so well to the second half of your first paragraph, that I deleted about six or seven replies to his posts. Too late in some cases. He now follows me enough to thumb down my comments.

I wish I could just groan and move on.

        • Well said. I can't argue with any of it.
However, though there may be no studies to back it up, I do believe that modern society is responsible for much of the fact that mental illness is increasing, especially in the young, and psychological welfare in general, is declining. I'm not even uncertain that it isn't all a part of building a society of easily molded character. I actually first encountered this in NZ, in the mid 70's. A whole society so completely homogenized that college students were unable to comprehend a class in free thinking.

          • Reasonable hypothesis, but I doubt you're even close to the full scope of why and how. To say it's just this generation is just weak in this aspect is not taking the whole situation into account.

          • Do you think that mental illness is actually more frequent or just more readily diagnosed? Honest question.

            • I think it's much more common now, in a much younger segment of society. I think the pressures of modern society, with no relief in sight in the future, cause many to lose their way and just give up. This manifests itself in the alphabet mental illnesses, social anxiety and the myriad of other things so many on here self diagnose.
