Here's the thing: we have many people now, that's true. But if we don't take any more, then the total number will drop as the older generation dies. Let's assume everyone who will have children will take 2 children (some will take 1 some will take 3. 1+3=4=2+2). If 1/4 of people don't have children, then total drops to from 8B to 6B. We have so many people now because the previous generation didn't do this. But if we do this, then population collapse is inevitable. We should remember that as people are being added, people are also being subtracted (dying).
