I just watched a documentary discussing elephants and how they grieve death which leads one to believe they have self awareness. Now if I was to be put in that situation I would save the human. But I would have much distress over the loss of the animal. I feel like animals are a lot more intelligent then they are given credit for.

I guess I should add that I would not save a scum humans life like the others have mentioned. Pedophile, Rapist someone like that is not worth saving.
