People make me feel like a freak when i eat out alone

I wanted a good steak dinner so I went to a steak restaurant. Every other table had families, friends or couples and I got weird vibes from them, like they noticed I was alone. The waiter who served me had a concerned look on his face. I just wanted a good steak but ended up eating quickly and leaving as soon as possible.

  • Just ignore those peasants. You devoured the steak so your conquest was completed! Next time, if they continue to stare, just stare back until they look away.

Probably just self conscious which can make you look uncomfortable, which will in turn, make others uncomfortable and invite stares.

I eat out alone all the time. The only stares I get are at my body.

Next time just drop it in the conversation with the waiter that you are in town on business alone if it bothers you that much.

Sounds like anxiety. Happens to me all the time in regards to eating out alone, which is why I rarely do it. Our country is overly social anyway. Half those tables are people in relationships just to be in one

You didn't ask a question, but eat alone whenever you want. Ignore everyone else.

I don't mind going to out to dinner or a movie by myself. I don't think it's a big deal. I like it when I feel so inclined, and can afford it, because it makes me feel independent.

I hate eating alone, so I pretend to wait for someone. At least it makes me feel better.

I eat by myself all the time, remember how seldom people think of you, people stare they aren't thinking of or about you.

  • I think the problem is in your head.

If you were acting nervous/self conscious, then people may have looked at you strangely because of that, not necessarily because you were alone.

I will bet it only SEEMED like you were getting weird vibes and that others were paying attention to you. If others were looking at you it may well be because you kept looking at them and they were trying to understand why you were looking at them. If we enter a situation feeling self conscious we assume everyone else's attention is drawn to the thing we worry about drawing attention to. It's a vicious cycle.

First mistake is paying any attention to anyone else in restaurant. I always do my best to pretend nobody else is in the place.

Nikki makes a good point about being self-conscious.

If people were giving you looks, maybe they were just feeling sorry for you.

I don't get it. It used to be that way but I see people eating out alone all the time now. Perhaps you just sat in the wrong place or wrong restaurant. It's not considered a fault anymore.

  • The only reason the staff would care is because you are taking a table that can seat more than one person. You’re cutting into potential tips.
If you’re alone, eat at the bar and nobody will care.
