I live in what you would call a remote country and I remember that during some years I had two pen pals. One in France and another one in Germany. We wrote for years until one day we stopped. Then, I wrote to my German friends some years ago and she was attending University.
I think that it was a way to encourage us to write. My mother tongue is neither english nor french and yet I had to write in those languages to my two pen pals. I was even invited to France and my parents had already agreed to it but I do not remember why it did not happen.
