Panic attacks after drinking?

I'm female and 22, I have generalized anxiety and situational displacement disorder (in case that might matter)
I've noticed after a night of heavy drinking I'll usually wake up a few hours after going to bed with a panic attack. I mean, full blown, eyes shoot open, heart is racing, I'm disoriented and scared out of my mind. Usually I'll take some vistril and pace my house a little, maybe watch some soothing videos and calm down after about an hour or two...is this normal? Does anyone else experience this? Why does my body do this?

I would say this is normal. I'm 23 and I been drinking for 4 years now. The first years of drinking I would get major panic attacks the next day. Mainly because I would think I was having a heart attack so I would freak out. I even went to the er once because I was scared. I been drinking almost everyday for a year and a half now and I rarely get them now. I will occasionally get one after a night of drinking and I will tell my self "you survived this in the past so you are not going to die" and i go on with my day and it never turns into a full on panic attack like it used to do.

Drinking often makes people panic less, and more likely to pass out when you go to bed, but it at the same time disrupts deep sleep. Even though alcohol is sort of a depressant, it also makes people act wilder and crazier. I used to think maybe alcohol is really half depressant, half stimulant. But the panic attack thing, I have heard that it can happen due to drink, although more often than not, alcohol makes people not care as much or worry as much. I've also read about how occasional people have bad reactions to alcohol where their blood pressure shoots up and their face turns red. I'm not sure if that's what happening with you, but it could be. It's probably best to lighten the drinking, only have like a couple, maybe 3 tops.

I think maybe I worded this a little poorly. The panicking never occurs when I'm actually drunk, it just happens in the middle of the night or the next morning when I'm hungover, I'll just wake up after a few hours and go right into panic mode. Doesn't happen every time, maybe 1 out of every 4 times I drink or so

This is not normal! Seek medical advice. But my suggestion would be to not drink heavy or at all. Since you having such a negative result to doing so.

This is normal. I have experienced this when I didn't drink enough water at the same time. Your body does this to keep you alive, because the chemical depressing your system wears off eventually and a little warning bell goes off that you're in danger. The solution is often to drink less or drink smarter.
