Our hospital are denying ventilators for people over 60

Our hospital are denying ventilators for people over 60 and are saving them for younger people. What they are doing is just sedating people over 60 and trying to make them comfortable to die, they are not even going to help them.

I honestly think its the right thing to do.

Check your source on this one, man, it seems like bullshit. If you're young and healthy then you've got a 99.5% chance of surviving the disease.

Even if you're over 60 you're highly likely to survive it. Unless your doctors are going round hitting old people on the head as a form of sedating them then they're not just sedating them and waiting for them to die, so I doubt they're saving ventilators for the people who don't really need them.

It’s still too early to analyse data. Too many unknowns. I think the problem is way more widespread in China than what’s been reported, which skews public image of this disease. And like the Spanish flu the second wave could be deadlier than the first. The disease could become seasonal. Once ICU beds run out around the world and health systems are overwhelmed we could see that fatality rate surge, and in younger age brackets. There are many young people who have survived this disease only by being able to assess proper medical care

Oh yeah, for sure. I don't trust China's reported figures for a second.

My father is 83, and my mother will be 80 this year, and I don't think that elderly people should be denied ventilators, especially when I think of the young people I saw getting drunk at the beach in Florida for Spring Break saying bullshit like, "I'm gonna party, and if I get the virus, I get the virus". A lot of people in my family on both sides live well into their 90s!

The people who are running around acting like there's no danger with a Devil may care attitude are the ones who who are less deserving of ventilators should they become sick regardless of their age!

I'm happy with the decision. I see old people out as well, I see em out walking there flea bags shaking hands with every other oldie they run into.

I agree with you about all those going down beaches and packing like sardines. They all should be denied ventilators, I think they are the most selfish pricks there is and should be in jail until this blows over.

It is a necessity. When resources are scarce you got to start crunching the numbers and figuring out how many people you can feasibly save. Now the elderly built everything which we are eternally grateful for, that being said the younger generation takes priority over the old. Been like that since forever.

If possible we should be using every ventilator for every person who is sick. If it's not possible chose the young because they are healthier and more capable to work.

It's a shitty situation that needs to be solved so theres a greater amount of healthy people.

I dont think people should be playing god just because of a supply shortage. I heard that hospitals in New York were figuring out ways to successfully use one ventilator for 2 people. I also heard that originally ventilators made in the US were not automatically being sent to hospital in the US.

Wow. I genuinely thought it was a troll post.

Do you feel this way about young disabled people and anyone else who can't contribute as much to society? Ventilators should go to those who need them the most, no matter their age.

I lost both my parents in one day a few years back, and I want them here with me again so badly it physically hurts. I can't imagine thinking, ah, they're better off in the ground because they were in their mid-60s and therefore contributed nothing. They worked their asses off most of their lives. I suppose I see older folks differently than you. We should treat them like gold. If I'm a loser for believing that, so be it.

By the way, thanks for your concern about my ass, but it's fine.

I feel more its letting those who haven't yet lived a life have more of a chance at having a longer life, where older have already had the pleasure of having a life. When I mention about contributing to society I more mean what I believe the governments want.

No I still believe older people should be living the good life, red wine on a beach, sitting watching tho soapies, its just times like this hard decisions have to be made.

No I don't feel the same about disabled. If they are younger I think they should be prioritised like all the other young and be givin a chance at living a longer life.

The problem is these punk breeders going around treating trips to the grocery store like family field trips cause the kids are all stuck home. Kids are unsanitary and spread disease naturally, and then they get the first crack at treatments because everyone needs to worship children for existing. Children contribute nothing.

Old people are a net good in every situation except in low medical supply amid a medical crisis.

I dont hate on any older generation, the Golden rule here. Our generation will probably do something stupid and I wouldn't want some future kid to be talking about wanting to see us all dead!

In these trying times we need to care about your neighbors and think about the community. Decisions like these need to be taking with the upmost respect for morals and logical outcomes.

I don't think anyone has the right to dictate how long someone else should live, young or old. I think the priority should lie with who is sickest regardless of age. I do admit my reasons for that are deeply personal.

Older people have the right to enjoy their twilight years, seeing their families grow. And we've no right to snatch parents (and grandparents) away from young people. What I'd give for one more drive up north to visit mine, oh man.

Should I paint a bullseye on my ass or are you good?

No bullseye, I'm a bad aim anyway.

I don't think its dictatorship when someone simply doesn't have the supplies for everyone. So you more would want first in best dressed? Thing is nothing is being taken from someone that they already had, I think they are just trying to best use the recourse they can get.

I hear ya, twilight years. I have elderly family as well and wouldn't wish any bad illness on them but I would hope that when shit got flung in a fan they would want me to live to their age by giving up the ventilator.

Lets just hope people listen to their governments and stop going out and parting, or hanging out in 100s by the beach so we can stop the spread.

You can artsy fartsy around and wollow in your sore bum but the truth is there is not enough medical devices and resources for people and hard decisions need to be made.

You have a better idea when it comes to rationing ventilators? I mean if you get sick and need one would you give it up for an old person? (assuming you are young).. Thought so

People think babies should be worshipped just for existing. We need to realize we live in a controlled free range livestock situation. If chickens realized new baby chickens replaced old egg laying chickens who get killed for meat, they'd peck the fertile eggs open. The farmer wants to protect his bottom line.

What's the thing you're not understanding. To the wealthy and powerful, average people are free range livestock. Continuing to have babies causes them to cull the herd. There are no more nations, we are all slaves. Do you accept poison in your water and food because stupid people reproduce to feel like adults?

      • LloydAsher

Old people provide a lot for the community on whole as it has been for all of human history. Allow them to live as long as they want if they are paying for it at some point something goes wrong and you die.

Only in times like these is thinking like that necessary. As trading becomes more strict non native resources will get low everywhere. Prioritizing those supplies for the young is paramount. During peace time it's an economy net good to have them around.

Thats why I'm happy to be in Australia. We are so rich, we have excellent soil and climate to grow crops and raise livestock. Economically we are doing excellent, we have enough food to feed triple our population! And with strict laws we implemented years ago we have a good supply of sea life. Our government is handing out stimulus money like it was lollies, Australia has a shit load of money saved up (in words).

But how many young people actually need these ventilators? I cant imagine there being that many and they may actually be saving less people than they could...

  • FromTheSouthWeirdMan

You need to check your source because there is no ventilator shortage in the USA as of now. The controversy is that they believe their will be one soon. They just shipped 4,000 from a federal stockpile to areas in New York city. There is plenty of ventilators. The sky is not falling.
