It's barbaric and should be illegal. Dogs communicate with their ears and cropping takes this away. Not only are you hampering the ability you're diminishing your relationship with your dog.
There are also lasting psychological effects for the animal.

Dogs with cropped ears can still move their ears around and communicate with other dogs, there's videos of dobermans and such on youtube where you can clearly see that if you'd like examples. Cropped ears are not stiff, the dog can still move their ears down/up.
I haven't found any evidence with reliable sources of these "psychological effects", although I'm sure it can happen if the crop is done by a non-experienced person who messes the dogs ears up because they don't know what they're doing. I don't really think there would be any lasting effects when the cropping is done right by a professional such as a vet.
