Plus, text speak is based on leet speak, which is from the eighties (message boards/newsgroups), and shorthand, which is itself, well, ancient! Even people my age (20s) used "text speak" (we called it chat speak) on MSN and in IRC chat rooms when we were kids in the late nineties - early 2000s. We probably understand it better than you do, but we've moved on, and so should you.
There are internet memes older than you are. Take it in. Be cognizant of that fact. Puts things in perspective doesn't it? I was in the same state of shock when I found out my dad had been using the internet since the early eighties, years before I was born. But don't feel bad, teenagers think they invent EVERYTHING.
