  • My father was reaching the point where he needed to give up driving and accept the limitations that his neurological issues were creating on his response time, etc. He was in denial and we kids were still unaware how bad it had gotten. One week he came to stay with me and I loaned him my Mitsubishi Eclipse to use one day. As his third wife had alway done the driving, he was also unaware of the effect that using a cell phone had on his attention to other things he was doing. One evening he seemed particularly rattled and didn't eat much, and was quite quiet (which was very much unlike him). He retired to bed early, and I happened to be outside when I noticed there were corn stalks, long weeds and grass hanging off the undercarriage of my Eclipse in the garage. The next day i waited to see if he was going to ask to use the car again for the day, but when it was time for him to head out, he said, "I think I'll walk the rest of the week." From that week on, whenever he would call and I would be in the car, he would ask, "Are you in the car!?!? DON'T TALK ON THE PHONE AND TRY TO DRIVE! I'll call you later!!!".
