Obsession with a fictional character

I've been in love with a fictional character for literally, years now. An obsessive kind of love. And honestly, he's kind of a random character. From a comedy cartoon. I fantasize constantly about him, no matter where I am, who I am with. It honestly doesn't bother me. I just wonder for my sanity sometimes. I mean, it's been years now. All I do anymore is draw him, think about him, write about him, etc. It's gotten to the point where I can't focus in school or do anything productive. I just want to do something that has to do with him, even if it's just thinking about him. It puts extreme stress on my relationship. I didn't think much of it at first, I just expected it to kind of fade out along with my other temporary obsessions, but this one has only ever gotten stronger, and like I said, it's been 5-6 years now.

I'm just wondering if anyone's ever experienced the same thing. Or known someone who has. Is this normal? Thanks.

I actually think this is fairly normal. The duration seems a bit long BUT that could just be because you haven't run across any characters who seem more interesting to you...

I say this because I, all of my friends, my younger sister, and most of her friends have had pretty deep interest/obsessions with various fictional characters. And I know of several internet subcultures that take it to an even more extreme level than me or anyone else I know; and I would hesitate to even call that "not normal". Building a fantasy life is what people DO. Especially locked in this silly world.

Just enjoy it, unless you find that it is making you or others actually unhappy; that would be a warning sign that perhaps something needs to change.

And @freeforall: Dude, seriously. I second the "is it really that big a deal", because you know-- it really isn't.... :s

I get attached to fictional character in novels whose authors are exceptionally fantastic writers. When the author spends so much time creating this character that there isn't a facet of them left that you don't know about and all of those parts create this perfect, ideal person it is very hard not to somehow feel connected to them.
And so you read this novel where every person within it is so well developed and every connection they have with each other feels so intimate (even if it is painful or somehow evil)it is no wonder that I somehow feel that I know them and got to connect to them in the way that they connect to each other.

I do this too, maybe not for that long but this obsession seems to be conflicting with your life now. You need to make some choices.
I once was really obsessed and I daydreamed about this character for a couple weeks then I had a daydream we broke up (WTF I know) and I didn't instigate the break ever since then I haven't genuinely daydreamed about him since... Well that's my 2 cents...

I have obsessed over characters who were fictional, but not because I was in love with them. How can you be in love with them if they don't exist? I think you can admire a character if they don't exist, like Alyosha Karamazov, the idealist, or Carlos Castaneda's Don Juan. To fall in love you usually need physical contact or at least some kind of actual communication. Otherwise, how can you truly feel love for the fictional character?

You could think yourself in love with them, like imagine it and imagine how it would be/what it would feel like, but I agree, you can't actually truthfully fall in love with a fictional character as you haven't actually met them as they aren't real. But I do have a fascination with a fictional character but it's just interest, like what would it be like if you were like them for a day, and what not... I think it's normal though.

    • well, how can you love God if you cant see him? (BTW i do love God im using this as an example)just because you cant see it doesnt mean u can't love it. like i cant see my dead dog but, i still love him and i can't see the guy im totally in love withh bucz hes fictional so here is my point you can love something and not see it at the same time. all you need is an image of them and imagination and a little bit of heart and poof you can see talk and even act them out.

I think they are the incarnation of your ideal partner in real life. Keep that in mind.

I think it is normal, especially if you try keeping it to yourself outside of the internet.

Glad to see a lot of people have this same issue as I do. I usually will get a crush on a character for... 2 months max? Then just move on, but... last year, when Pokemon first introduced Guzma, it's like something within me just awoke. I felt nuts! Yeah, I've liked characters before, but Guzma made me feel weak and heart-blasting. I started only drawing him (still do), making crafts of him, reading fanfics of him, creating clubs and threads dedicated to him, and even wrote my first fanfiction with him in it (coming from a 26 year old).

Yes, about a year has passed since that day, and my obsession is living strong. I try my best not to incorporate it in my real life and relationships, so I think things seem pretty normal. Like I said, just keep it online, or within your bedroom.

We all have similar situations, apparently.

Hey yeah I'm facing the same problem I absolutely can't concentrate on anything because of this . It's not normal because even though characters are created to be ideal I don't think that this should happen you know . I feel like I would die if I wouldn't meet the character atleast once in my life just to see his actual face and then say that I love him . It would be surreal but I still don't think this is normal cause I fantasise all day about him and he's always in my thoughts . it gets on my nerves .

I'm obsessed with a cartoon character from an obscure cartoon that aired 50 years ago. It's not that I necessarily think of her romantically, or picture an alternate reality where I'm intimately involved with her (although she's very attractive and probably the cutest cartoon I've ever seen). She's pure, she's compassionate, kinda flirtatious, motherly, naive... when she's mistreated in the show it makes me feel sad. I empathize with her. I connect with her on an emotional level that I have not explored since I was a young child.

I feel exactly the same, from what I know, a lot of people have also been attached to a fictional character so I'm guessing it's quite normal, I feel in love with Max Caulfield from Life Is Strange
