Obese people riding around on scooters really annoys me..

It really gets on my nerves when I see obese people riding around on scooters everywhere. I used to work at a supermarket and these women (usually women) would be cruising along, in everyone's way as they rolled down every aisle putting the MOST UNHEALTHY AND FATTENING foods in their basket. And then asking for assistance to get the 4 boxes of Ding Dongs off the upper shelf for them because they can't reach it. It really makes me mad. And to add to that, a lot of these people are receiving social security disability payments of like $650/month because they're morbidly obese and can't work because they won't even try to get off that damn scooter. The seat on the damn thing is like 5 inches wide and their ass, edge of cheek to edge of other cheek is like literally 2 foot long. So I'm losing 20% of my salary every week because I have to pay taxes so some lazy person can ride around on a scooter. Not cool. I'm not a mean spirited person, if this person is truly disabled and the weight came because they are unable to move, that is a different story. I'm talking about these people that are HUGE, they know it, they do NOTHING to change it. It really bothers me especially when I see them putting things like chips, Hohos, candy bars, sugary cereals, etc. in their little baskets on the front of their scooter. I know I can't be alone in my thoughts about this. Maybe try getting off the scooter and walking and you might lose some weight, and leave the crap food on the shelves. Any progress, even losing say 1 lb a month, anything is better than just saying "fuck it, I'm fat, the government will take care of me". Oh and when I see them with school-aged children, that irks my soul because 9 times out of 10, the kid is obese too. I just don't understand letting yourself go like that.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Idk you never know the story. You don't & that's how it is.

I understand that it might be frustrating to see people who appear to have self imposed problems sucking up the resources that were originally designed for those who were not disabled by their own crippling life choices

    Buuuttt

People who have severe, crippling food addictions
People who compensate for horrific child abuse by comfort eating and making themselves unattractive as a coping mechanism
People who used to weigh 600 lbs & now weigh 300, lost a shitload of weight but are only halfway there because it takes time & they have joint damage
People who happen to be fat AND disabled, or got fat after they became disabled

    Those people exist too

    And they scoot

Most people aren't any better. You got your drug addicts, porn addicts, dog fuckers, anti vaxxers, stupids, arrogants, mental disordered smokers, insomniacs. Obese people just wear their addiction on the outside of their bodies, so you think it's fine to hate them. Everyone does.

I'm not a person who believes being fat is healthy, but I am a person who's fucked up a million times, so I don't hate other people for fucking up in whatever way they do.

Maybe try thinking about other people's lives or your own be4 you get all sanctimonious.

I don't want to puncture your self-righteous rage - everyone should have a hobby of some sort - but if you're an American, only something like six to eight percent of the federal tax you pay goes to food stamps, energy assistance, child care, other income security.

Maybe you should consider being outraged at where the majority of the money you hand over to the IRS actually goes: more than half of the US federal budget is spent on the military. Perhaps something would be done about that if fewer Americans believed they were God's gift to the world and you have the right to stomp around the globe imposing your will on everyone else.

I don't mind being called "self-Righteous". I have a TON of flaws but I take FULL RESPONSIBILITY for mistakes that I make. I don't try and blame anyone in sight.

I get what you mean but there are plenty of cases where the disability may have predated the obesity - e.g. if someone has a disability that effects their mobility then it might cause them to put loads of weight on because they can't move much and they feel depressed.

You don't really know what's going on with someone just from seeing a little snapshot of their life like this.

      This is very true.

In a society where calories are so cheap and manufacturers design their products to push our species' happy buttons, it's extremely easy to pile on the pounds. Since being overweight is scorned, that can easily lead to some degree of depression, a lot of people take comfort in eating, and so a negative spiral starts.

Following the birth of our daughter, my wife had hip problems which made walking or even being on her feet for any time painful. That resulted in her gaining weight. I'm sure that was, in turn, part of the reason she fractured her ankle after misjudging a step over a little ledge on the side of the road, and then her forced immobility due to that resulted in her gaining even more weight.

She's starting to reduce now, but it's not easy.

I don't have any such excuses for my extra pounds, though. I'm just a lazy bastard with little self-control when there's sweet stuff somewhere in the house.

She has my sympathy. I had mobility issues for a year after my second baby and it made it damned near impossible to stay a healthy weight. Yes, I could have reduced my calories more, of course, but when you're ravenously hungry because you're breastfeeding and you don't get any time to yourself due to little ones, and you can't do any exercise and you're absolutely exhausted, it is really difficult to keep on track with all the will power and effort that goes into healthy eating and weight loss.

The modern world makes it far too easy to be overweight. Ultimately the responsibility still lies with the individual, of course, but it stands to reason that the easier it is to be fat, the more people will get fat.

I cant help it I do look down on fat people at the store riding scooters and getting junk food. Next time you're at the store peak in a fat person's cart and you'll see that its full of cokes and potato chips and twinkies. But these same people will say "iTs mY gEnEtIcS!!"

The sad part is it's actually really easy to lose weight if you're not lazy and you'll just do it. People enable fatties too much by telling them its a disease. Its just pure weakness. They're fat because they choose to be fat.

I think in some cases those scooters do encourage laziness. Where someone able might've otherwise walked. What I hate is sitting on a bus, theater, etc. But treated like I'm the inconvenience or annoyance to them. Or act like I don't like being crammed against the wall. By someone panting like a Labrador & rubbing their sweaty arm flaps on me. Looking like a can of busted biscuits, in clothes way too small!

Theres a way to solve that bs. Install a screen on the back of the seat, thats lights up bright and clear where everyone can see, and when they go to sit behind the wheel, it displays how much they weigh by displaying different animals (pig, cow, hippo, elephant, etc.) I bet they think twice before having that 4th piece of pie at dinner.

  • It's a "strategy" for sure, there's a resource to protect people like that and there are obviously people who would gladly become overweight so they get free money

It means not caring about your weight or doing physical work, being able to eat whatever you want whenever you want, having a source of income, and an easy excuse when people call you out (because how will a stranger know they don't really have a glandular problem)

It's basically a life built around instant gratification

One plus side though is these people really bear no significant role in society except for friends and family, so as long as you're not an employee on duty you can basically say and do whatever you want to them

Very true, definitely a strategy behind it. Might not start out with a strategy but once they see how easy it is to let the government take care of them, they take full advantage of whatever they can get. It used to irk the hell out of me to be called down an aisle to help some 400 lb lady reach the Entemanns donuts on the top shelf. This happened at least once a day.
